  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Favorite cinematic build up with music

Any of the Leone & Morricone films, every scene of them.
The James Horner score during "Aliens" when Ripley fights the Alien queen and flushes her off the airlock.
Several scenes in "Braveheart", namely Gibson coming for revenge from the garrison's captain after his wife has been murdered, again, James Horner.

***STAR WARS SPOILER ALERT***

Lots to choose from, but I'd have to hand it to the climax of Star Wars, when Luke is flying the X-Wing through the trench, Darth Vader is about to shoot him, but Han Solo shows up and gets Vader off Luke's back and he launches the torpedoes into the Death Star.

Glorious music by John Williams. Still gives me goose bumps.

I'll always enjoy when we first see the Brachiosaurus in Jurassic Park as it grabs some leaves and comes slamming back down to the ground.

So many films.. let's start with Vanilla Sky final scene from the elevator revelation to the skyscraper rooftop.

Magnolia also comes to mind.

Will post more when I have time!!

PS Let's keep this a SPOILER-FREE thread if possible

The Departed opening credits gives me goosebumps every time. I love that you don't get the title until more than 10 minutes into the movie, too.

Indeed. I figured it was OK to talk about the ending of Star Wars, since it's one of those movies that practically everyone in the world has seen.

But, yeah. If you're gonna include spoilers, write a warning at the beginning of your post. :cheers2:

This is kid of hard, since sound design and score are one in the end, together with performance dialogue. So I am tempted to say a bunch of movie names based on the goosebump educing themes composed for them

Let me start off by saying that ANYTHING that uses "Amazing Grace" makes this list!!! :) I was going to say "Braveheart" but RH beat me to it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V84STSWVp3g There is also "Menphis Belle" when they are heading out... regardless of your religion, this is one of those songs.

"Jurassic Park" is also a fantastic example, and that is the scene!

"Chariots of Fire"

"The Way We Were", because how could you not recognize Marvin Hamlisch's genius? So possibly the end of the film for that one.

"The Bridge on the River Kwai" Try to use whistling in a war movie and make it work. :)

"The Sound of Music"!

The list would go on and on...

Another music-image moment for me is in "Empire of the Sun", when Jim wanders through the airplanes being welded at twilight, sparks flying everywhere, and he touches the plane, and then the pilots salute him. In fact, that movie has a lot of those moments, like when Jim sees the pilot waving at him in slow-motion during the bombing of the prisoner camp & airfield, and then Jim jumps up and down on the rooftop as the hangers explode.

As a "Star Trek" geek, I'd also have to add Jerry Goldsmith's music during the inspection flight around the Enterprise in the first Star Trek movie.

Other favorite soundtrack pieces in favorite scenes:

"El Cid" -- the jousting tournament for possession of Calahora, the final battle when El Cid rides out of the city gates

The asteroid belt sequence from "Empire Strikes Back"

Big sections of "Vertigo", too many to list.

Lawrence's journey through the desert after he blows out the match, in the first part of "Lawrence of Arabia".

The funeral scene and the goodbye scene in the Smallville section of "Superman: The Movie".

Dune - Riding a herd of sandworms in attack on Arrakis to the city of Arrakeen.

Black Stallion - boy rides horse on beach.. oh wait, that's a Nikon moment! bah! ;)

The Man from Snowy River - Jim Craig brings in the herd.

Superman - Boy becomes man in the ice fortress... Superman flying out.

I agree about the ST:TMP.. Other Trek might be ST:TVH when the Bird of Prey stops the whalers, or the grand sequence of Spock's death during the birth of Genesis in ST:TWOK.

TRON (1982) - the end of the MCP, looking over the animated city lights in the real world

Princess Mononoke - introduction of the tree spirits

Lord of the Rings - attack of the Ents on Isengard

oh.. many more.. :) neat thread. ~s

So many of the one's that first come to mind have already been mentioned, but c'mon, no one thought of 2001: A Space Odyssey? Kubrick cut the film to the music used (Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Blue Danube, etc.), then hired Alex North to compose a complete soundtrack, and at the last minute dumped it in favor of his original musical choices. Unfortunately he forgot to tell North, which was a bit of a surprise for the accomplished artist when he attended the grand premiere!

When you hear Thus Spoke Zarathustra and probably Blue Danube, you most likely associate it instantly with 2001. That's pretty telling for music that had been around for a century (and in the case of The Blue Danube, quite well known). Space ships waltzing in orbit to Strauss = brilliance.

I was extremely affected by Lux Aeterna throughout Requiem For A Dream
