  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Fastest 5k offload time

As a baseline, using windows copy from RED CF and RedMag readers I was averaging these numbers:
120 MB/Second -- E-sata
86 MB/Second -- Firewire 400
56 MB/Second -- USB 2.0
(edit: These rates are single source to single destination; the previous numbers were simultaneous copies to two destinations)

Is this software reliable? Has anyone reported any issues?

I would encourage you to look at shotput pro also...

www.imagineproducts.com

It has the added advantage of being able to handle any type of media and is multithreaded.

Admittedly, I haven't looked at r3d manager in a while. Maybe it's gotten better.

Are you saying R3D Data Manager does not support multitasking? We use ShotPut Pro and it seems to be on the slower side of things. Granted we are using a Core2Duo laptop but on average we are getting 2+ hour offloads for the 320gb drives, connected FW800 to two eSATA Gdrives.

Todd, I think this is a mistake. Did you mean FW 800? The maximum speed for 400 is 400 mb/s, or 50 MB/s

Also, both R3d Data Manager and Shot Put are great, but Shot Put is faster while doing the same level of file verifications.

Thats not true - R3D Data Manager and Shotput dont offer the same level of file verifications. R3D Data Manager does 3 reads - twice on the source and once on the destinations - so to ensure that the footage was read accurately, and that the footage actually made it over to the destinations safely. Additionally, we use industry-standard (i.e. computer industry) methods of determining differences in files. Shotput does none of this. The reason above is why on some systems with shared routes (i.e. multiple firewire devices) it seems slower. On properly configured systems, its faster than finder to multiple destinations.

We are expanding our product line, with the recent Al3xa Data Manager, and will support other file-based capture systems soon. But we are multi-threaded, and have been for some time.

Next to the camera, RCX, Clipfinder, R3D Data Manager is an essential piece of RED gear. WHy would you not invest in a piece of software that ensures correct treatment of your "negative". I never understand how people think that just copying a drive over is enough.

In larger production environment it is essential to be able to audit data copies and figure out where things went wrong. If you use r3d data manager as a way of copying and moving media you can be sure that the data integrity is in place.
