I feel like i'm in a bit of a weird spot here with my lens collection. i recently transferred over to a C100 from using a Gh2. I had an awesome lens package on my gh2, voigtlander 17.5mm .95, 25mm f.95, 40mm f2 (crazy sharp), and 58mm f1.4. All fast, all great bokeh, and it felt amazing to have wides that I could shoot with some shallow DOF. The 17.5mm f.95 was a true gem. I even had the slr magic 12mm f1.6 which actually had some pretty cool bokeh that you could use creatively
Coming over to canon it seems like there's no "gotta have it" fast wides out there which is a real bummer.
Right now I am building a contax-zeiss set (unless I change my mind and sell em off haha) which includes the:
35-70mm f3.4, 50mm f1.4, 85mm f1.4, and 135mm f2.8. Pretty much all i'd need on the tighter end, but gonna need something wider than 35 on a 1.5 crop of course. The contax line is kinda lacking in fast wides although there are some good ones out there. The 25mm f2.8 is a good option, but then again stuck at the same problem I didn't want to be at, its not very sharp at 2.8 so gotta stop down to 4 to really get some exciting performance out of it. Sure there's the contax 21mm but then i'm spending 1.7-2k on that which is a little outta my range, and still only 2.8. The 28mm f2.8 is solid but not wide enough for what i'm looking for.
I'm willing to part from the contax line for wides, as many find they have to.
I remember in a past lens thread a user was talking about how there is a certain magic that comes from shooting a wide angle that has some shallow DOF and I totally agree. Speed is less important to me in the higher focal lengths, but as a shooter, I find it a valuable asset to have a wide that can go fast either out of necessity (event stuff, low light) or out of artistic choice for creative pieces.
So I turn to you reduser, what are some awesome wides that i'm missing out on? My plan for now is to rent some solid ones from lensrentals (I have the lensrentals HD thing where I get freeshipping on everything) and try and find some solid ones. I am open to vintage glass that would potentially mix better with my contax stuff as well.
I'm hoping i'm not regretting my move from m43 haha. I love the c100, but if only those two pieces of glass would cover aps-c, that would be an absolute dream.
