If not recording audio and noise of the fan isn't an issue am i best to set the fan speed to 100% during standby and recording? It can't hurt the camera or wear the fan down quicker? It seems like it's working quite hard at 100% but my new scarlet is very precious to me and i'd prefer to be extra kind to it.

So is 100% overboard? I haven't upgraded to the new fan system. I will be shooting in some very hot climates too.

Thanks and sorry if it's been asked before etc etc.......

Well if it's really hot out, then it's ok. But if your at 100 at both record and standby then you will bring the temp of the sensor lower then it was calibrated to from your last black shade. Producing the chances of noise in the image.

I admit no particular expertise, but logic suggest "full auto" to be the best solution. This will protect the sensor from over heat when needed, and save battery (and maybe grain/black cal issues) when not needed. The "auto" fan paramiters have been set for a reason.

That's not necessary at all. And honestly, it will only serve to give your camera a bad reputation around town. It's sounds petty, but seriously, word spreads quickly and your camera will perpetuate the perception that Reds have over-heating and loud fan issues. You should set it to auto.

Just my 2 cents.

Set the camera to AUTO, and you'll be in your best settings Fan wise, the only reason I would take it out of AUTO, is because I need AUDIO recorded in close proximity of the camera and only then I would set it manually to what ever sped while recording so that the Fan noise may not disturb the Audio recording.

I bet you could use manual setting to 35% rec, 55-60% stby without trouble at 27C.
(I usually shoot 30% rec, 45% stby when room temp is at 27C, using our FanPlate).

First make a test and see how your camera is managing heat. Not every camera/setup reacts the same.

Unless I am very close to the mic and the location is library quiet I find 35% keeps the audio guy happy and, unless the ambient temperature is pretty hot, that's enough flow to keep the camera happy. That said, I am looking forward to the new fan retrofit. As Ketch mentioned, summer is coming...
