Hi, my name is martin bendersky. I'm a DIT base in bsas, Argentina.
I'm working in a feature movie... the dp ask me if i can take a still picture (tiff) from the false color scale so i can know how really work comparing it with a IRE scale. Do you know how can i do it??
tks!.

If you have a means of capturing or recording the HD-SDI or HDMI output from the camera, you could pull frames from that recording, but I don't know what, if any, use that would really be. False color is an exposure tool and not really something you would directly relate to an IRE scale.

Read pages 52 and 53 of the RED Operations Guide. There is a false color scale there and brief description. Values in false color don't necessarily conform to traditional IRE. But consider that green represents 18% grey, pink is caucasian skin tones, but that doesn't always work -- too many different skin tones out there to rely on that. I treat yellow as full white or 100IRE. Black or 0 IRE is dark blue in my thinking. You can adjust your FLUT control to set your green (mid grey) where you think it should be. Remember, FLUT and ISO are meta and can be changed in post.

With that in mind, I suppose you could say purple is like -10 IRE or a super black, but can still retain usable detail. Orange is like a 105 IRE I guess. It's starting to clip, but there's some usable info there still. As you progress into red, it's usually clipped. With the MX sensor, I don't fear seeing purple in the dark shadows or areas that can be black. But I try to stay away from any red in my false color display.
