So here's my situation. I currently have a 2009 8 core mac pro with a quadro 4000 card running a 30 inch and a 24 inch monitor. I have a blackmagic sdi card running to a 24 inch grading monitor. My issue is that when I use the sdi out in Adobe I have to work in a blackmagic timeline. Everything works fine, I just get horrid playback. Playback on a 4k timeline matching the settings that the footage was shot in plays way way nicer. So now even though I technically have 3 monitors, the grading monitor is only used when I go to davinci due to performance issues with it in adobe. Since the monitor has a slew of inputs, one of which being dvi-d, I'd like to get another video card so I can run dvi to that monitor for use in Premiere. My question is 1. what kind of card should I get that will work in my setup and 2. should I be running my other monitors off of this new card and save the 4000 for gpu only or does it not work like that? I'm planning on getting a new mac pro when they become available, so I'm not looking to spend much at all. I'm just trying to do some band-aid work to this thing to make life a bit easier as I await the new one. Thanks.

I've got pretty much the same setup but with a gtx470 in slot 1, a gt120 in slot 2, redrocket in 3, and blackmagic decklink in 4. The 120 I recommend, has both mini displayport and DVI, and is relatively cheap online. It should work well with your grading monitor and doesn't take up any power. Find a used one on ebay or craigslist for fairly cheap. Especially if your going to upgrade soon. The typical rule with Resolve is to use one card for GUI strictly and the powerful one for GPU/CUDA processing in Resolve.

Matt... thanks. Just picked one up for 55. Pretty cheap solution for once. Thanks again.

Also, do you or anyone else know if the GUI and GPU setup works the same in Premiere? I could be way wrong, but I remember reading that Premiere uses the GPU that is hooked up to the primary monitor, or where you have your dock. Is this the case? If not, if I got my 30 inch off the 4000 and only ran a 24inch, would I see improvements in cuda performance?

ok, this might be a total noob question but it kind of fits the topic... we've replaced the factory video card (ATI radeon something) with a quadro 4000. then someone pointed out that we could have just added the quadro to and use both cards at once. but I wasnt able to find out wether there would be some kind of compatibility issues or something and my friend didn't exactly know it either. does anyone know if that's possible?

From what I know it's a lack of power on the motherboard to run both of those cards at the same time. I had a radeon that I removed and replaced with the 4000. The radeon took up both of the power ports so it was the only card that could run. The quadro takes up 1 of the 2, so at that time you can throw in a different one. Keep in mind that this was with my radeon and I'm not that familiar with other models and their power needs.

Im wondering the same thing about Adobe Premiere?
I just put a GTX 660Ti in slot 1 and a GT 120 in slot2. I am running both my monitors out of the GT 120. I stupidly forgot to order power cables so I cant test it for a few more days.

TRy not running Resolve and Premiere at the same time, or turn off the grading monitor in one or the other. If both are using the grading monitor at the same time, usually the editing program won't playback on the grading monitor

At least that's way happens to me with FCP, Resolve, FSI monitor and BM Decklink Ex 4k...

Premiere is using the GPU of the card with the GUI, Resolve is using the one without a monitor.
