  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Extra $1000 (more or less) for HDRx on Scarlet?

There are a lot of interesting development in the camera market. New 4/3 sensor and like camcorders will come to market. I'm sure that only cinematographic features like better control of focus and HDR will make de difference between the cameras.

I voted Yes. I would like to have a Bolex type of cam, capable of doing professional quality picture in a small and affordable form factor.

Ps : adding a future assic module could also be a great solution.

To further the modular argument:

A single processing module could serve to add multiple functions all in one; HDRx, increased frame rates, expanded RedCode support, etc. ... You get all of this, while adding a couple inches to your unit. Now how much would you pay? :biggrin5:

As I do many VFX shots, HDRx™ for scarlet is a must for me. And as someone who's been waiting over 2 years for the beast, a few extra months and $1000 is nothing for the value of HDRx™. HDRx™ will highly benefit the movies I will be working with.

But from a social and economical viewpoint, I would have to say take advantage of the whole modular design and leave HDRx™ out of the 2/3 scarlet. The most impotant thing is to roll it out ASAP and at the lowest cost possible. Then in the coming months after Scarlets and Epics are selling like wildfire, a HDRx™ scarlet brain can be introduced for those who really needed it, or maybe even a trade up option. Yes, trade up option. Sounds perfect!!!

** EDIT **

It's the best of both worlds. No more delays and price bumps to the Scarlet, and not everyone will need the additional DR. For those who will need it, then can wait the extra time and pay the extra $$ to trade up a brain. Like Red One to Epic X, it's a Scarlet original to Scarlet HDRx. hopefully still around $1000 for trade up.

I feel it's nearly impossible to conclusively say whether or not I'd pay extra for it without knowing what the DR of Scarlet is currently.

I can say that I would like a camera that can get me 12 or so stops of range.
If Scarlet is doing less than that, then yes I would pay for HDRx™ mode.
If it is doing 12 stops right now without HDRx™, then I'd be perfectly happy to have it as is (and have it sooner rather than later).

As many people in this thread, my concern is less about money - and more about time.
But without knowing what baseline we're starting from, it seems meaningless to debate the importance of HDRx™ on Scarlet.

I agree with what most people said here.

The number one priority is getting Scarlet 2/3 fixed out as soon as possible.

And yes, the fact that is being asked probably means Scarlet 2/3 is a long way off... oh God.

$1000? No brainer - I know it would be a hassle to develop multiple cameras and different price points to satisfy everyone.....

I think Panasonic, Sony, Canon & Nikon do this to the extreme.

Tough call for RED. Do you ramp up and sell as many cameras for a little as possible?
Or do you add a killer feature that would make potential owners of a Panasonic, Sony, Canon & Nikon sit up and take notice?

EPIC will be way beyond the budget of most shooters. I can see that EPIC will be big in the rental houses.....

I think the price point break now for most decisions is a $5000....Don't have any emperical evidence - only a hunch....

So Panasonic's new 4/3 camera I think the AF-100? will be around $6000 without a lens?

Given how divisive the opinion is so far, I think the only option for a progressive company like RED is to offer a choice. Scarlet without HDRx for the existing price, and a Scarlet with HDRx for +$1000. Or perhaps an optional upgrade, much like the R1 and MX.

For the Scarlet S35 it may be a bit of a no-brainer. $1000 added to $7000 - probably around $15000 kitted out - is a small price to pay. But for a $4750 Scarlet 2/3" Fixed, $1000 is a pretty hefty increase. Perhaps if a more specific thread were created - "Would you like HDRx on Scarlet 2/3" Fixed for $5750" the answers would be a skewed a lot more to the "No" side.

Regardless, I feel the best thing to do would be offer the option.

I agree with Yannick,
The savings in time and lighting cost are well worth the extra price. We run very light and lean and would benefit greatly from the HDR option! It would open up filming possibilities that we just blow off now.

What kills me is that we may have to wait even longer for the cameras. Lets hope not!

Lets strip out all of the new features and go back to 3k for 3k!!!!

Yeah that would get me more excited. And it's a critical part of defining a product's identity. Apple, for example is brilliant at defining precisely how much hardware you get at a price point. Sure, you can do a lot with an iMac but it's not going to be PCI expandable come hell or high water. And so on with iPods vs. iPhones vs. iPads, etc.

Yes, we knock folks like Canon and Sony for 'dumbing down' their prosumer camera feature sets compared to their professional gear. But they know precisely how to maximize each product line for a price range and stay in business for the long-term, while making technological improvements incrementally.

Point is- Scarlet is supposed to be a RED camera for the masses. More importantly it should be narrowly defined enough to catch people's attention and hard-earned dollar- i.e. that they are getting a specific amount of RED's vast technology and DNA for a price point. The key to Scarlet should be keeping it simple.

Lots of speculation on delay times and module possibilities. I'd wait to hear directly from Jim on how much of a delay he would expect and if a module option is even possible.

Otherwise, I say keep the 2/3 the way it is currently moving, and offer HDRx as an option for 2/3 2.0 and S35. Those who want it, sell their old brains and upgrade.

I would pay the extra $1000 and am thinking the other way around. The added 3+ stops increased the life span of Scarlet quite a lot. Still, find it also important that Scarlet remains as close as possible to the original idea of a professional pocket camera.

it being October (no chance we will see scarlet in 2010 like we we're told from that interview with Jim from summer) I say NO - just release it asap and bring this up again in early 2011

I think that if there were a way to make a module that would enable HDR on scarlet, that would be cool. I would even pay the extra $1000 or so to get it on scarlet, but in terms of time, this is extra and i'd rather just get the camera sooner. HDR is an extra feature and its really cool, but i don't think its a necessity.

Here is my view:

1. Keep the 2/3 fixed lens as it is to have something to give to the mob ASAP. A 1000$ hit on the price on this one would be more substantial in term of % increase.

2. For the other models, for me, it's a no brainer. Bring it on!

I'll get the two brains anyway, the fixed for scouting/viewfinder/quick and dirty previz and a S35 for real shooting.
