  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Extra $1000 (more or less) for HDRx on Scarlet?

Where's the option for stop debating features and ship the damn thing already?

We all want that, but unless a miracle...

The only I'd want to know is if the S35 will be available in 2011. 7K$ for the brain would be fine (and maybe a run & gun kit at 10K$). I don't need HDR on the S35 nor delays.

No more delays or price hikes please.

A 3K camera capable of 12-13 stops, 150fps burst for under $5K available by the end of the year that comes ready to shoot?

This is already beyond the moving target that is Digital Cinema Camera manufacturing. Just release it. Please.

It's not the camera that makes it look pro... just sayin'.

Of course it isn't.

But it sure helps overcoming an initial unwillingness of someone to watch your film.

If this wasn't important why are we all here again?

YES absolutely. Especially on the Scarlet S35 and Scarlet FF. It already costs 7000 for just the Brain. 1k more for HDR? Yes, please. I doubt Scarlet Fixed or even 2/3 interchangeable people will be interested, though. 1k on a 4750 fixed kit is just too much, but a good S35 package is already going to cost upwards of 12-15k easily.

100% Agree... I think it must be done in two differents polls.

I want two Scarlets S35 for spanish low/mid budget features... so i would love HDR. I could rent an EPIC-X or FF35 for some shots, but if i found a great sunset, or sunny, or else... Love to have this option.

May be only a new s35/f35 pols please!!

Gear v. Craft is a topic for another thread... Or has it been the topic of MANY other threads? I think I've seen it before. :sarcasm:

:jacked:

I believe the current topic is: Are you willing to pay another G for a 2/3 Scarlet?

I voted Yes, but I'm only interested in the Easy HDR modus. So if the 1000 extra bucks is only for the other special HDR modus, then I would have voted No, easily. I just do think that HDR in general is a killer feature.

And of course, I also don't want the Scarlet to have another delay...

But in the end, I do believe that Jim and the RED team will make the correct decision, whatever it is.

Actually, the question didn't specify "2/3" and because of the ambiguity the respondents are, understandably, interpreting things based on their own focus. That, among other things, pretty much makes this poll :willy_nilly: irrelevant anyway.

I don't think it makes much difference. If the camera has the power to process two exposures at the same time, it should be able to do either Easy HDR or HDRx as the only difference would be software.

I definitely want this feature on the 2/3", but it could wait for a second generation model rather than delay the current one.

Sure sure. But the discussion has been very informative for Jim, no doubt.

Jim what about offering the

Fixed
2/3
and S35 Scarlets with HDRx a SSDrive, a Module and 1.8" Reader

On these HDRx models do away with the side card module and pass on the savings ???

For those unable to afford this, offer the standard Scarlet boards.

Personally I think by offering a competitive HDRx and SSD package most people could justify the extra cost.

Looking at the results of the poll I think the extra 1,000 may be a bridge too far for some without such an offer. By offering HDRx plus the SSD option for say 2,500-3000 I think
most would be willing to come on board (excuse the pun).

Jim it may also be worth telling people if adding HDRx to the Scarlet would delay the cameras release date. From what I have seen I don't think this would be the case as most of the hard work has been done on Epic.
Then again this is pure speculation on my behalf and only you guys can answer this.

For what it's worth I really think the fixed scarlet with HDRx and SSD would make it an amazing camera and light years ahead of competitors,
and the leading Eng, documentary and Low budget camera on the market.

I'm not sure. I'm not a pure tech-head, but reading this article by Adam Wilt:

http://provideocoalition.com/index.php/awilt/story/red_visit_21_september_HDRx™™/

he says this:

As the two exposures are merged prior to recording, there’s no increase in data rate for EasyHDR™™.

If you defer exposure combining to post-processed HDRx™™, the two images are stored as separate tracks in the same REDCODE file. Yes, this stores twice the data, and may require up to twice the data rate if one is to maintain the same compression levels (the highlight track will use different encoding parameters to optimize the data rate, so it usually won’t be twice as much). Even so, EPIC provides REDCODE 50 and REDCODE 100 (RED ONE normally shoots in REDCODE 28 or REDCODE 36), so this isn’t an insurmountable issue.
I could be reading it wrongly, and I'm sure the people at RED know much more then I do (I often read threads here with open mouth, understanding nothing about the technical underpinnings, but I'm more a director, not a cinematographer or videospecialist).
But doesn't that mean that Easy HDR is much easier for the processor?
In that case, it would be wonderfull if the Scarlets could only have the Easy HDR, and the Epics the special HDRx™™.

EDIT: But probably I'm mixing up the data rate to write data away with the processor power to 'do the magic HDR' trick in the first place:

The two exposures can be combined in-camera (“EasyHDR”) and output as a single stream. The image shows normal motion blur over the lower part of the tonal scale, but adds a sharper trailing edge on highlights (“Magic Motion”).

I'm personally only interested in the S35 Scarlet, unless the ultimate pricepoint, with modules etc would be out of my price range (which is a very good possibility, but anyhow).

The processor still has to digitize two complete data streams for two separate exposures at the same time. Then further processing power would be needed to combine the separate data streams in camera. All of this has to occur within the time space of one frame.
EasyHDR= more processor intensive
HDRx= more media write speed intensive and twice the file size.

His disclaimer at the end of article..just like him..very thorough and factual..:)

I do not personally own any RED products nor do I have any financial interest in the company. I paid my own way to Los Angeles ($182.95 airfare and rental car) and received no material compensation from RED, other than a Starbucks Coffee Frappuchino from the company fridge: retail value about $2.50.

Let me clarify my p.o.v. The HDR is an amazing developement, but at the moment I do not have the clientel to pay it off within a one year period. Mainly because I mostly do audio work for video. I do video shoots, weddings, sparingly because it is hard to find good reliable help. I plan to use the Scarlet for my first feature. The script is ready, audio gear is in place, most of the lighting is at hand. Just need the camera at the budget I have set aside for it. I have to stay on budget. So an extra grand could put my feature on hold even longer.

I would think that just weddings is the one application that really needs HDR. Consider the common high contrast between bride and groom combined with sometimes harsh sunshine, and the reflectors and lights you would need for a usable picture would cost a lot more than $1000.
