  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I am hoping someone can answer my question.
I have a shoot with Dragon where we will be shooting at 120fps.
I will have a video feed out to a client monitor.
My external recorders says it can record upto 240fps if the camera outputs that frame rate.

My question is, when shooting 120fps, will my external recorder be able to record at 120fps and therefore when I play back takes from that external recorder, will the playback be in slow motion (120fps)

I will not have the time to play back via the camera for the external recorder to capture that playback.

Hmmmm I guess that is going to have to do! Ill just tell them to use their imaginations and make it slower in their minds until they see the proper 120fps file.
Is it only Sony cameras like FS700 or whatever they are that allow these external recorders to capture upto 240fps on the external recorder? Would have been something handy with Red, so is that a hardware thing or firmware deal?

Playback in Camera will be whatever you record at. So, technically you could record to the recorder on playback. Keep in mind the quality when in playback from the RED is lesser quality that in live feed mode.

Thanks Bob,

Although playing back to the external recorder would be the logical answer, in my case this is not easily possible as ill be shooting in the water and was trying to find a solution for my director to see playback of takes, in the specified slow motion, while I setup for the next take. If I can get 50p out of camera and record that on my external, playing it back in 50fps slow motion that would be ok but im still not sure it works that way?
I have two options for recorder with both odyssea and atomos recorders, so ill do some tests prior to the shoot or see if we can afford a video split operator who can play back at '100fps' as a dirty guide.

As I was asking earlier, I wonder if being able to spit out 100fps down the line while shooting live, for similar applications to what im hoping to do, and whether its a hardware or firmware thing.

Hmmmm,

Still kind of struggling to work out my question.
A recent shoot, I was shooting 100fps and SDI out to Odyssey monitor 7Q. I looked back over the recorded files on the monitor and they played back in slow motion 50fps.
This was a happy accident as I had not tried to set this up at the time.

Now I want to know how I (accidentally) did it in the first place but cant replicate it!
I cant see where to adjust signal output to 50p as the only options I can find in my Dragon menu is Hz, which my understanding is kind of the same thing when it comes this???

I have set my camera to 720 50Hz and my monitor to follow input signal, base 25 and base 50 (pal country) and it will still always play back in 'normal' speed and not slow mo!

I tried the same thing with my Atomos flame monitor/recorder too but operating options seem a little limited on that recorder.
Hoping someone might be able to guide me through the process if possible.
