Hi

I need to buy one or more 2x extenders for PL.

I need it/them to work with Supers, Masters, Ultras and possibly RPP and Standards.

I have seen one which works with standards, but not with masters.

Price is not necceserily the primary concern, quality is.

Any suggestions?

(Should I post this in the Market section?)

The Schneider one is based on the old Century 2X Extender which is the go to extender for rental houses. There may be some clearance issues with certain lenses and the Schneider model, but it would be a good option in regards to quality.

Thanks Mathew

I have used the Century, and I think it didn't work with the MasterPrimes. Do you know if thi will work with the longer Ultras?

Cheers!

Matt, what's the difference in quality or function issues between the Schneider and Angenieux's at $6,000+?

I'm fairly sure the Schneider/Century is a rehoused Nikon TC-201 teleconverter. I have an Optex version that also uses this optic. It's a perfectly serviceable teleconverter provided you start with good glass to begin with and if possible stop down a stop. I use it on my PL converted 200mm F2 Nikkor and it makes a very useful 400mm F4. I'd think Master Primes would do just fine with it but they'll cut better if you stop down to 5.6 (T2 on the lens). The Angie 2x and 1.4x optics are specifically formulated for the 24-290 and 17-80 and I do not think it's possible to us them any other lens.

Evin is exactly right. Century's teleconverters are Nikon glass.
Tim, The Angenieux tele converter is made by Angenieux at the same factory that makes their lenses. One would assume that the glass is optimized for their lenses. The housing is also made to fit directly onto their Optimo series and provides a scale for the corrected aperture readings.

Does that mean that Angenieux will not work on the Nikon/Schneider extender?

Matt, for my Zeiss lenses, what would you recommend for the "best" extender for Zeiss standards?

If you only loose one stop with the Schneider, what makes the Angenieux so good with the loss of 1.7-2.0 stops? (Of course you didn't say it was "so good", did you. My assumption)

The light loss is a factor of magnification not quality, a 1.4x will be one stop a 2x 2 stops, regardless of manufacturer. The only really accessible option is the Century/Nikon, don't be too overly concerned with the teleconverter's quality, it's fine, be more concerned with the lens you put on it. Teleconverters are always a compromise, they make a lot of sense on very sharp/fast long lenses in the 135mm+ range but not so much on shorter focal lengths covered by primes or zooms.

Evan, good information. What's your definition of "fast"? Thanks for your help.

I would also like to introduce a new extender, a 1.2x. This is a new design, that is being made by my company, digitaloptik, here in Hollywood. This design is made for digital cinema cameras, and is not a FF35 optic repackaged. The extender is meant for older zooms (a Cooke 5 to 1 (20 to 100) is used for the test) and longer primes that have a 28mm image circle (original Academy 35 format). I will post the tiffs on my website soon, before NAB. The test shows the 5 to 1 at 5k on a Epic M, with and w/o to extender. Alas, it does not correct the pincussion/barrel distortion in the original lens. The extender is just over 1/2 stop. Included is a pdf explanation of the test shots.
