Extended Warranty

I am anxiously waiting for the day when warranties finally expire so people will start opening up their cameras to see what the can modify/soup-up/improve or break!

How can you guys own such a cool piece of technology without opening it up to see what makes it tick?!?

:-)

I'm a "tear it apart and see what makes it tick" kind of guy so, fortunately, I shipped my RED #206 to Birger engineering the day I got it. Erik got a little look inside when he removed the PL mount and gave me some clues, and now I've only had it back for a few days, but I think the break took some of the edge off my intense desire to start pulling it apart.

But the itch is building... can somebody talk me down?

...or encourage me....

...damn it's hard being a junkie....

Nice, Jarred - but I think plastic tape would be more water/moisture proof.

It would be great if you could buy the extended warranty anywhere within the first year. Sort of the way Applecare works.

Just a thought..

Hi Brent and Jarred

You both commented on an extended warranty option but still no word. Is it still being discussed? Have you decided to go forward with it? This is a feature many would want.

Just requesting the extended warranty to be either transferable to new second hand owners or/and to be able to be purchased by second hand owners

I hope this works out. I would consider paying for a couple of more years of warranty.

Yep. . . I'm very interested, as well.

Would be nice...a Red way .

We are doing our due diligence on this matter, for sure.

Not to harp red team but this was brought up almost a month and a half ago. I am sure you guys are busy with NAB comming up and so many things on your plate but it would be great to know when we could get an answer on an extended warranty plan.

RED Extended Warranty - if you break your RED due to negligence, Finner will personally fly out and kick your ass.

Wow, writing legal stuff's pretty easy! :)

I understand everyone's desire for more information on this. As soon as we have more info, we will post it. I have no new updates at this time.

One of the difficulties in coming up with an extended warranty plan is establishing a cost factor that doesn't take advantage of the customer, yet is not a high risk for the manufacturer. In the early days of RED (it's only been 8 months of shipping, but those are dog years around here ;-) we have had our moments of frustration and setbacks. These cameras are world changing, as everyone has come to learn, but it hasn't been without a little pain. Before we can extend the warranty, we've got to have a bullet proof and solid camera. We feel that day is here and we are now just getting down to the subject, in earnest, of the types of programs we would like to have.

We are considering both extended warranties as well as RED Insurance, assuring a replacement camera on set in the event of failure. Up until now, we have been offering Double Platinum Super Gee Whiz service at no cost, because of the beta nature of he camera and our commitment to supporting our early adopters and faithful even though it was anything but cost effective for us. So now comes the time to put a value on that service and we're, as Brent says, working hard to come up with a fair plan.

We have listened from the beginning to you, our community and our family. We welcome your input, what you feel is important to have in a program that both supports the customer in the field as well as simply extends the camera warranty period and what you feel would be a fair price to pay. We know the industry rates, we know what similar programs cost, but we are interested to know what you think. The issue that many may or may not be aware of is the simple fact that much of the cost of competitors products include the cost of support and represent a respectable percentage of cameras priced in the $60K to $120K price range. At $17.5K, there's not a lot of margin for those costs. We're all ears and we welcome your opinions.

i dont need nesseceraly an extended warranty for assecoires....these can be replaced with ease.....extended warranty/red insurance for the body would be cool.

---right now a 3 year guarantee would cost 4000 Dollars....

1st year free then every three months 500 Dollars.

A german insurance company would insure my red+Assecoires for 700-800 Dollars per year (repair/stolen equipment included)-----just the body would cost 400 Dollars per year.
means
after three years i would have paid 1200 Dollars for the body only.

If red would extent their warranty/insurance for the Red+BP Pack+ 1 Lens for 2000 USD i would take it.
or pay 1000 Dollars for the body only. (1.5-2 % per year)

------if something goes wrong, i dont know the exact english word....but if the replacemnet of the body costs 17500 USD....i have to pay 25% of this ammount myself (dont have to pay 25% for repairs)

Cmon, the extended warranty was designed to take advantage of the customer. Extended warranties are some of the most profitable items
from stores like Best Buys.

You guys are working too hard at this....that why I like yous.

I carry equipment insurance which covers the camera as well as all the other gear I have detailed on the policy. So if by chance the camera gets damaged or totaled on a job (as long as it is not in a war situation) the repair is covered less the deductible (which I think it is $500). So I wouldn't expect Red to cover any kind of situation like that with an extended warranty. However, if Red were offering an insurance plan that would cover us in the event that the camera goes down for any reason (including some idiot knocking it over on set and putting it out of commission) and the Red insurance would get another camera into the mix ASAP, I'd be interested in that, which in a sense is like production insurance.
Warranty and extended warranty is to cover manufacturer defects. That should not be an expensive program to offer the buyers.
