  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I know that there are numerous threads outlining various methods of using the r3d files. But to find anything useful to my situation is like looking for a needle in a haystack. So heres my question.

I've got some vfx to complete for a film finish, the pipeline is not set yet. But I was told that production would pass me the r3d files.

I'd be working in shake for the most part and perhaps a bit on Nuke.
I've no idea if shake or nuke would import RAW files directly, so how should I proceed with the conversion.

12bit to 10bit dpx, I'm losing out,

Does anyone have the r3d to .EXR CONVERSION SCRIPT script with them?
I know this would be best suited.

Or should I be asking for a tiff sequence with a 2.2 gamma embedded and finish the effects and recovert back to log .dpx for output.

thanks in advance for all your suggestions.

I am in a similar situation as you are at the moment. We have scheduled a 5-day shooting starting on Tuesday. The final short film will include some heavy vfx work. We have decided on going with a .exr/16bit workflow. Works smoothly with Nuke (our main compositing solution), PFTrack, Maya (to a certain extend) and Houdini. Since our final output format will be HD we'll be working in REC709 space at 1080p (shooting at Quad HD).

The big question mark at the moment is the conversion of the footage. REDCine didn't work the last time we tried it on the Mac so we're going to test a few more options tomorrow (REDRushes, REDAlert) one of which will hopefully work.

To clarify, this is not an established workflow in our case but rather the solution we came up with based on the information we found in the forums and elsewhere on the web.

Hope that helps.

Sandeep,

I think you would best off requesting TIFFs and working with them for the sake of retaining bit depth.
