Well I hope the new Express Card Media slot will support the new SxS media standard. 16GB cards will be available in the next few weeks, according to recent news, if not now. I like the no reader needed for current MacBook Pros! The specs indicate these are REALLY fast, 100MB/sec. This is double what Red requires for 4K at present.

875 for a 16 gig card when I can get 2 cf cards for 400? mmmm.....

Red has a new card format other than CF?

No, not officially. But I have been following the express card developement and wondered how it might affect Red's strategy moving forward. The fact that my Laptop is all set to go with an ExpressCard reader is nice. And the speed is certainly better. I just don't know what it means in terms of making that work with the camera right now.

I don't see express being an option for Red for a looooong time. They just have too many things on their plate. They chose CF and that the way it's going to be for a while. The modularity they've been promoting won't come about till everyone has their camera, which is going to take a while.

We are anxious to make Express Card an option. But they aren't fast enough (yet). There is a BIG difference between Read speed and Write speed... and what is real vs. what is a published spec. Some of these cards spike to a good level but don't sustain it.

We WANT other options to CF. But they need to work... all of the time.

BTW... adding an Express Card writer to the camera is NOT the holdup.

I'm using one right now... it works fine expect if you bump it pretty good during recording. We don't have a fix for that. You'll need to keep it for slamming around during recording. The new firmware build shows dropped frames, so you know right away if there was a problem. It works fine if you keep it on the camera because there is less tendency to smack your camera around. I'm probably making this a bigger issue than it is, but don't want anyone to be surprised if they slap the drive around during recording. It is solid, but not as "solid and solid state". No real surprise.

It seems to record "forever"...

Jim

I would expect the RedDrive isn't any more fragile than my laptop since the drives are the same. I beat the piss out of my laptops and they keep chuggin along (knock on wood) I also have several external HD enclosures with 2.5 drives in them and no motion based failures.

I assume you guys put some vibration dampening inside the case? a rubber mounted subcarriage of some kind holding the dirves.

That's why it's so good you are giving us flexibility. The Red Drive will be perfect for long interviews, concerts, etc where not a ot of bumping going on but you need long record times. And my experience with the Firestore has been pretty good as long as the cable doesn't get slightly detached. If the drive is mounted in good shock absorption it should be able to handle a lot of situations within reason. I am able to take my 744 audio recorder into some tough conditions where it's being bounced around a bit and it works all the time.

I'm glad to hear you are using one Jim and hope they'll be made available to us by the new year. That would be very cool.

That's true, but it's rare that you may be knocking your laptop around WHILE recording a sustained data stream with no chance to recover from a hit to the drive.

Doesn't the 744 record to flash media, or is there a hard drive backup inside as well?

It actually has both and can record to them simultaneously. And I use both of them with full confidence. It's a great machine, well constructed.

The harddrive mount inside the 422 recorder.

Damping foam...

The machine is quiet and can take some abuse while recording. Not to mention you can record up to 192K to the hard drive with this thing, so it really does hold up well. I would think the Red drives will have similar damping.

Steve

Keep in mind I know nothing:

but is it naive to think that there could be some Red magic solution that uses the Red Drive in conjunction with Compact Flash to recover dropped frames if they aren't too severe? A kind of buffer that's constantly recording and erasing and then occasionally saving the frames that were dropped (and reported in this new firmware) on the red drive and inserting them when the recording is done?

I'm sure this has already been thought of, just thought I would throw it out there and see what the responses are..

Jim,

Any chance that you could set up a Camera with both CF and RED Drive but use the CF as a buffer to the DRIVE?

This way the bumping the drive isn't a problem... just record to the CF module, and have it real-time copy to the DRIVE with error checking... what do ya think?

(heheh just read the above post)

(love this stuff) :)
