Export to Avid creates conflicting file names

I'm having an export problem. This is with both version 2 and version 3 of RCX Pro. When I transcode my media, I get two different file names. The clip name in the ALE file retains the original media name but the name of the exported MXF file is completely different. For this reason my Avid software is unable to link to the media. For example, red file name "A001_C002_1008O8" becomes MXF file name A001_C002V011AF7CEC1 but the clip name in the ALE is still "A001_C002_1008O8". And I'm unable to relink to the media. Is anybody else experiencing this? Or am I simply doing something wrong? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Avid doesn't use filename to link to media on the drive/ It uses a unique ID that is in the file and the database file in the folder. Importing an ALE will not automatically relink as it doesn't have the ID to do so. Am Automatic relink is done by dragging all the AAF files from the AAF folder that was created at the same time as the MXF and the ALE.

Thanks for responding, Michael. Where would I drag the AAF files? When using Metafuze, I would simply export the mxf files and then create an ale and import it into Avid and then relink. Worked perfectly. However, I have new material shot on the Epic and my version of Metafuze won't recognize the files. So I've started working with rcx. Thanks again.

Thanks for the info, guys. Unfortunately, I'm still having the same problem. I'm dragging the AAFs into my bin in Media Composer but it still won't link to the media. I've tried exporting from rcx directly into the mxf directory in my avid media files folder; I've tried exporting and then dragging the mxf files into an mxf folder in the avid media files folder; and I've tried dragging into a "1" folder inside the mxf folder. Each time I've refreshed the media directories before importing the AAF files and/or attempting to relink. None of this seems to work. At this point, I'm down to exporting quicktimes with the DNxHD codec and then importing from there.

Not sure why the mxf export isn't working. Any thoughts?

You don't import MXF. Copy the files to the Avid MediaFiles/MXF/1 or better yet, create a new folder called 10 that just has these files. Do not have Media Composer running. Once MXF files only are copied over, launch Media Composer. In project, create bin, then import all the AAFs from the same batch.

I actually did not try to import the mxf files. I put them in the Avid Media Files/MXF/1 folder. Then I restarted Media Composer but still no luck. Seems strange to me. I'm running MC 3. Is this a process designed for more recent versions of Avid? I never had any problem with Metafuze. Is anybody else having this problem?

If you open the MediaTool, do you see the files there?

No, I do not. I can see them in the MXF/1 (or MXF/10 folder, since I tried both). But they do not seem to be recognized by Media Composer.

Did Media Composer create a database file when it evaluated the MXF/1 folder? That would be a file that ends in ".mdb." If it didn't, then it doesn't recognize your files as valid media files. If it did, you can drag the mdb file directly into a bin and it should populate the bin with master clips for all of the media files in that folder.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is that the Avid MediaFiles folder must be at the root level of any drive it lives on. Is it?

Media Composer did not create a .mdb file. When creating the mxf files, I copied the file structure from my other media drives: H:\avid media files\mxf\1. This what all my other media drives look like.

Are you seeing any MediaFiles whatsoever? If you import a JPEG or QT, where is it putting it?

BTW, there should be no space between "media" and "files". The correct folder name is exactly "Avid MediaFiles". Perhaps that's causing the problem?

You were absolutely right, Peter. Simple as that. Thanks a lot. Really appreciate it.

You're very welcome :).
