Hi guys,

I'm having my first big production and I would like to use storm on set.
I'm having some problem with the gamma visualization on the exported clips for dailies.
I export as quicktime with avid DNxHD 36 codec. 1920x1080. rec 709. filtering box.

For the pregrading I use redcolor as color space and redgamma as gamma space.

the exported clips I got are with black more open, grayer, than I have in storm.

can you help me to sort this out?

thanks a lot

marco

First tip would be to have a look at the waveform and histogram.

Are those blacks really black?

Do a test (if you have a wavefor handy)
Export a chart (CDM or similar) and compare the waveform readouts from Storm and your resulting file.

How are you monitoring your files?

Thanks Gunleik for the quick reply.
right now I'm testing at home on my macbook pro. no external display then.
I did the waveform test and it's actually says what my eyes tell me: the blacks in storm are around the 0 level, once I got the clip in final cut raise up to almost 10 point level.
the two clips looks completely different.
am I doing something wrong?
I have different visualization exporting with redcinex as well.
any clue?

thanks a lot

If you are working with FCP, why do you export DNxHD? Try ProRes!

If you go Avid, export MXF with DNxHD. When you take QT wrapped DNxHD you need to import that afterwords in Avid. As Uli said, FCP is ProRES and change the Gamma Correction in the QT Dialog Box from automatic to none.
Working with ProRES in QT containers is always a pain with gamma issues....

Hi guys!

@Uli: I used FCP just to have a look to the transcoded clip waveform as Gunleik sudgested. The editor will actually use Avid to edit.

@Rainer: thanks for the informations. what would you use in the avid DNxHD box as color levels, 709 or rgb? and what about the alpha channel?

So, If I try to import those clips in Avid I should have right gamma visualization? Is the first time I work with an avid environment...

thanks a lot for the replies!
