Hello Red One Family,

New to learning about this camera. I have been ready and watching interviews, and raves about the Red One. I have Final Cut Studio 2 and downloaded RedCine and Red Alert.

Can someone explain to me when do you use these applications during the production or post production workflow?

Thanks much...
Aaron

Final Cut can't import the .r3d files that the Camera shoots. But the camera also creates proxies that can be imported into the studio to edit from directly as long as you've installed the REDCODE codec downloaded from RED.

The two apps you've asked about will transcode from the original .R3D files to any format you want to edit with directly in FCP. They also can create a "one light" or "Best light" color correction to each of the clips. There is also a plugin for the Log and transfer tool to work much like the P2 workflow. In this workflow the proxies are used to create ProRes files you can use to edit with in FCP.

One of the most important points on REDCine is it's the only app where you can currently work with the RED 16x9 footage (without going into Scratch) - everything else - REDAlert and FCP Log/Transfer are ONLY 2:1 ratio enabled - so, if you've shot in 16x9 -> then you will need to "process" your footage thru REDCine for the time being.

Hey thanks guys. Your input helped give me an understanding. I downloaded all the apps and plug-ins. As far as the Log and Transfer plug-in, you have to update your Final Cut Pro to v6.0.3.

I am anticipating the rental house in my area getting this camera. Hopefully chesapeakecamera.com will have it.

Much appreciated...
Aaron
