Hello! I've been thinking that I would really like to work with some DP's that can really expose me to some new theories and practices in lighting and composition. I haven't had many mentors in the field and would really value the opportunity to work with some high-end DP's. I feel that I am in a position now to understand and benefit from what I could learn and though I stay extremely busy shooting, could carve out some time to work with some really talented guys out there who wanted to let me absorb and drop some knowledge here and there. I have an Epic package and a full 1 ton grip package. I'm in Fresno, CA. Does anyone out there need some help on a project or two or have any ideas about how to get involved into a mentor type relationship. The dream would be to work closely with some ASC calibre guys or really anyone that I could learn a lot from.

Has anyone out there had a mentor/apprentice relationship that has really helped them in their development as a DP or director? Do you have any words of wisdom on how to get into a situation like that or make the most of it? thanks for reading...

I would suggest getting a camera operator reel together (if you have operated a lot on your shoots). You can then work on getting on bigger projects as an operator, although this may still be a long haul at least you will be getting paid in the end.
As a steadicam op / camera op I've gotten to work closely with a number of ASC Cinematographers which has been very cool indeed.
As an operator on a union shoot there is a good amount of downtime to observe and you're right in the mix of setting up and composing shots with the DP and director when the time comes.

I definitely need to go to more ASC events and need to kind of get into that whole scene.

I love operating and actually think I'm pretty decent at it. I have been thinking that might be the way to go for sure.

Thanks!

Eric I just read your post and this is excellent advice. How long after you got your operators reel did it take for you to start getting calls? Then how long did it take for you after that to get your IA card as an operator?

Well done Justin! Keep looking until you fully fill your search! Never let anyone get you down on your dreams mate!

Cheers,
