  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Expendables 3 Shot on RED

I love the Expendables franchise. I did notice how soft and grainy the last movie was. I wondered if it was shot on film. Perhaps it was just how they shot the last ones. Possibly it could be that I'm getting used to seeing digitally filmed movies and film now looks different. I wonder what is the ratio of film vs digital that is i production in Hollywood now? I heard Sly liked film but it is interesting that this has changed for the third movie.
 
The first one was ho-hum to me. The second one was hilarious because they did the tongue in cheek humor that reminded me of Tropic Thunder in a few ways. It doesn't matter on this forum because the material point is that another Hollywood movie is shot on Red. One day soon, Red will not bother to even note that their tech was used in big budget movies. Water is wet and the sky is blue.
 
I gaffed a pickup shot where we shot Terry Crews doing his bit. Cool to see them all put together in a finished product.
 
Dont know if it was the first or second I saw of them. But I was disturbed by how grainy it was. Guess you get spoiled with digital formats as red.

I too was a little distracted by the grain in the 2nd instalment although as with everything, I got used to it and enjoyed it regardless. I look forward to seeing how this one will look.

As for Bruce, he is not in the film. There was a fairly public break down in the negotiation process... enter Harrison Ford.

Thanks for that update Dustin, so busy with preproduction here in Barcelona, that I have not been paying too much attention to the news.
 
I am kinda glad they're switching to RED - even though I have no particular love for the camera above any others, the second installment had some nasty artifacts which looked like a combination of under-exposed film and someone cropping in to the film after a scan.

I think the run-and-gun style of filmmaking works much better with digital... at least in my opinion it does.
 
While I thought the ending "war" and conclusion was too much and forced, have to say I really liked the look and how the Epic performed here. Was this Dragon? They weren't affraid to show the aging of the actors, and the image actually survived well the strong, contrasty grading. Looked much better than Transformers 4, that's for sure!
