  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Expectations...

I don't see Canon releasing a FF35 video camera. That has never been a common motion format, Vistavision not withstanding. Just doesn't seem all that practical.

If Red can release a more than competitive 4k S35 camera at a modest price they will be dropping into a very hot market segment for sure. Doesn't have to have Epic level performance to trounce the low end competition.

Sorry, I am on a rambling rant.... Just thinking of a digital DoF. If you use one of the second video streams (like HDRx) for your digital blur, you can theoretically choose your DoF. Maybe I am just brain storming (Wild Expectations!!!), but why not?

I think people have gone a bit crazy with the S35 interchangeable desire. They are really difficult to operate well and cost more for set up. The 2/3 fix is a perfect camera for the indie newbie crowd. If they want to make a living in this industry there's more potential with a 2/3 camera, they are easier to use. There maybe a ton of DSLR short DOF clips (I won't call them films for the most part) out there on the web but how many of those shooters are actually making a living from this type of content?

These so called 'DSLR' personalities have mislead a lot of people into thinking that making this type of content will get them hired in the industry. They talk a lot about how to get the slow tracking rack focus shots because they are all getting a cut from the manufacturers who make this kit or from speaking engagements sponsored by these same companies.

But how often do they talk about how to get work in the business or how important it is to shoot a series of shots that has some logical progression.

The reality is if you want to work it's the event, corporate and commercial world that you should start in. And a 2/3 camera is the ideal camera for the majority of this type of work. Don't get sucked in to the big sensor, shallow focus bs.

Why do people think Scarlet will be 3K or 3.5K? RED has said that 4K is minimum for footage being future proof. If they make sub 4K camera it would make them hypocrites.

Scarlet fixed and interchangable have always been 3k. No way you can have missed that? Expect 3k and if it gets more to and still not get much more expensive be happy.

Then Scarlet will not produce future proof footage according to RED.

If you are disappointed with how Scarlet turns out, don't buy it.
That's not the point. The point is that RED says that under 4K is not future proof, then why would they release sub 4K camera that is not future proof? That's why I have no doubt Scarlet is 4K. If Scarlet had "just" those specs that it have always had, there wouldn't be this hype by RED that something awesome is coming in the form of Scarlet, something we don't know yet.

Well, that's the last "official" word we got. But beyond that, if we assume it also still has a 2/3-inch sensor (and I do), 4K wouldn't end up resolving much more actual detail anyway. That is, not unless you can find lenses with supernaturally high MTF.

IMO, the ideal/ most realistic situation that would meet our demands would be a 2/3 fixed Scarlet and S35 interchangeable Scarlet. 3K is plenty for the vast majority.

I agree that many potential Scarlet buyers may have trouble operating an S35 camera, but some of us know how to professionally operate this equipment and are willing to pay more for one. It's all about choice. May not be the smartest move, but if a novice or beginning filmmaker wants to pay twice as much for an S35 Scarlet, more power to them! I just hope we have that option with the Scarlet lineup come Nov. 3rd. Either that or I hope Epic-S is still alive! (hasn't been any acknowledgement of its existence for some time now...)

All the full frame PL lenses now mount to Scarlett ... that should tell you all something, not red-rocket science ... see what I did there, you see RED is the company and Rocket science is hard... no, laughs? ok, I'm a shooter not a comic.

3K is plenty for the vast majority.
So is 2K, but again that's not the point. 3K is against RED's ideology and believes. It's against their word that people shouldn't shoot sub 4K because it is not future proof. Releasing sub 4K camera would make them hypocrites. That's why Scarlet will be 2/3 4K.

Look at what you wrote, and listen to how it makes you sound ... pause ... now ... if it's a 3K camera it will be priced accordingly, nobody here is owed anything.

So um... Nov. 3rd. Yeah.

Sensor Size: Nov. 3rd
Price: Nov. 3rd
Resolution: Nov. 3rd
Frame Rates: Nov. 3rd

Um... Yeah.... Nov. 3rd See Ya There!

This is the information I noted down over the last weeks-months-years...
RED Scarlet Fixed 8x
2/3 sensor with 3K resolution
Lens (28-224mm f/2.4)
Side CF module
REDMote
RED Touch LCD 2.8" (not used anymore) so perhaps 5.0"
REDVolt and charger
--> $4.750
One year ago RED added HDR(x) and Magic Motion --> +$1.000
And if you want some more recording space, you add...
Adding RED SSD Module 1.8" --> +$1.500
Adding RED Mag 1.8" 128GB SSD --> + $1.500
Adding the REDStation Reader 1.8" --> $250
This gives us a total of : $9.000

This is what I know and on nov 3th we will know more...

Dislike these kind of comments, if it was 3K it would be more camera than most out there would need. It can be whatever Jim wants it to be. Please..

If anyone is disappointed in the Scarlet Nov. 3rd announcement... they suck. And we won't lose one minute of sleep. The announcement is just too good.

You can keep insisting on the accuracy of your bent logic and you can insult RED in the process if you want. I don't doubt that the Scarlet announcement will be exciting and memorable. Scarlet will beat the competition in every way possible - I just don't happen to believe that 4K is either likely or necessary for that to be the case. You are blowing smoke.

There are barely 4k projectors on the market... Most finish in 2k

Yeah but in his defense you could literally fill an entire recon thread with just quotes from Jim saying that "2k isn't enough" "1080p doesn't cut it." "If you aren't shooting 4k today you'll want to overdose on sleeping pills in the future." etc... ;)

Jim has even said that if 2k was enough he would quit.

So RED has been extremely vocal about disparaging 2k/1080p. I disagree about the world shattering importance of everything being 4k... but it's going to be a tricky duality to both call 2k inadequate and announce an "amazing new product" which is designed for 2k deliverables.
