  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Expectations...

If you do innovation you get all the shit. If you don't do it nobody opens the mouth - they wouldn't dare to bitch on Nikon, Cannon, Sony or Arri. So you give them the finger they want the hand - don't get upset - you made it !!! and who does not like it - let them spend the money elsewhere - at the end of the day it goes to the banks who are the shareholders of the big groups. You rocked the boat, you made history. You know its worth more than money!

Jim, one question.

If you guys could provide some Scarlet r3d files right when the annoncement begins, this would be great.
Not that i can't buy Scarlet on sight with the specs list, but i'd rather see it as specs are not that important to me.

Yannick

If anyone is disappointed in the Scarlet Nov. 3rd announcement... they suck. And we won't lose one minute of sleep. The announcement is just too good.

Jim
hah I love how RED guys talk. No acting and trying to be the neutral, every word wisely choosing business owner. Feels like you are just one of "us".

Why not just wait until we announce before guessing?

Jim

Sorry, It is hard!:)
And I just think now on many forums is competition of whose guessing will be more exact too:)
But on many forums I have read the price is arround 18-20K is real expected, 22-24 will be a little much I think.
It is just my opinion.

I think the majority of people here have realistic expectations, but they we are not vocal about it.

Instead we wait for the ACTUAL information.

Can't wait to hear all about it, and anyone who thinks you inderdelivered just doesn't get it.

I was blown away with my R1, my Epic arrives Monday, and can't wait to add two Scarlets to the mix!

Please keep inflated, we are all behind you and totally psyched!

I'm pretty sure most of the those who have unrealistically high expectations aren't current RED customers... They want everything for nothing, basically. Pretty hard to live up to. If you own a RED ONE and know what it can do then you know what kind of leap forward Epic and Scarlet is - and you certainly wouldn't expect it to be priced as a Sony Handycam. Aside from being innovators and evangelists, RED is also a company that needs to make money to invest in future products and technologies. They need to pay rent, electrical bills, wages and so on. Please stop being unfair by expecting the world for a nickel and a dime. Even if the Scarlet will be priced slightly higher than you might have expected, you know you still want it and you'll figure out a way to afford it anyway :)

This makes perfect sense. I am not a Red customer at this point (though I think I hope to be given the opportunity to become on on November 3). My company has shot film to this point on our larger projects and various camcorders/a Canon 5D Mark II on smaller pieces. Having a really high quality camcorder from Red would be a nice addition to our arsenal. Almost certainly the main camera in our "low budget" kit, possibly something that we use as a "B" camera on larger budget stuff in conjunction with 35mm, Epic or another digital cinema camera.

I was hoping for a scaled down Red One at a manageable price. Perhaps not sub-$10k, but sub-$15k, but "hoping" is the operative word. I do not expect anything other than the best inexpensive professional camera on the market, which is what Red has said they will be releasing.

Gotta agree with Jim there. The silent readers are saying nothing more because their aspirations for a dream camera have already been met

Sure, just like everyone. But it would be interesting to know something you never get, which is the real cost of manufacturing a camera/product, the r&d, the salaries, etc... Without knowing that, it's hard to get what can be reasonable to expect, or not.

GH2 - $1000
AF100 - $5000
FS100 - $5000
F3 - $10000

All 35mm-ish cameras.

I'd expect an interesting relatively low cost S35 solution from RED. IMO that's a key factor but let's wait and see.

My expectation is something that will compete with the F3 in terms of price and blow it away in terms of specs ;-)

Native files for the unlucky ones?

Native files for the unlucky ones?

I've got my finger on the buying trigger, but I will need to see the deal first.

There's no doubt in my mind how good the deal will be, it strictly a question if the deal fits into my plans/needs/workflow.

But regardless if I can buy Scarlet or not, forgive me for nurturing the following hope:

  • Crisp highres images of Scarlet's every nook and cranny (pretty much a given)
  • Package contents and price
  • Package delivery dates
  • And if you have time to manage: please provide some native files for all of your followers that might not have the opportunity to buy on the 3.rd (they can, of perhaps should be, mundane shots in available light to get a feel for what this camera can do.

Can't wait.

A 2/3" Scarlet that can blow the doors off the competition's $30k+ broadcast cameras for less than $10k would be just fine by me.

The biggest win for me is a camera that shoot raw!! And at a price I can affort.
I don't have an extra 20. grand for computer power to process 5k in post.
So everything of 2k and behond I will be very happy.
It is the Red workflow the raw that I really would love to be part of.
Scarlet as a camera to be a Red Starter and working towards a Epic.

My only left over questions (and not holding me back from buying) are the "characteristics" of the Fixed 8X zoom (the 720p footage available is hard to judge) and the low-light ability of the sensor (which I'm hoping will still be great even in it's 2/3" state)... the contents of the package and the price I'm sure will be great. I'm also still curious about where they'll land on SSD or CF... I'm selling my CFs with my 7D so I guess fingers crossed for SSD!

Elmer, you can process 5k footage with a Mac Mini. You just have to be patient, that's all ;-)

hahaha... that would be very realstic to get work done ;-)

I Just love to see the Scarlet as a Red Starter and or field camera.
Where you can load the footage in a decent laptop (in the field) edit and deliver.

““Whatever Scarlet turns out to be... there will be nothing close to the price/performance.”
Jim”

That’s pretty much all that matters for “us”. An opportunity to learn “RED” and make a lot of mistakes more “cost effectively” than making the same mistakes (first time) directly with a bunch of EPICS! Who knows we may actually do some really nice work with Scarlet or even an EPIC-S (type idea/instrument) if such an idea is still on the table??? So base modules that are between $10-17K are certainly viable.

Whatever Scarlet and associated announcements turn out to be I am pretty confident that this will provide a lot of new opportunities for a lot of different groups to get their foot in the door or enable them to really run with some fantastic and worthwhile projects. That’s what it’s all about... right?

Good Luck on the day!

Eric
