when i see the huge order numbers around here (up to 3700) i have one question to red team and jim:

did you expect THIS great success of redone when you start this project?
or what where your dreams and what where your nightmares (50 orders?)

In an early interview with Mike Curtis, I recall Jim said something like "if we only ever sell 1,000 cameras, I'll be disappointed."

I'd wager Jim is not disappointed. :)

When I met Jim I asked him how many Red Ones he wants to see on the market at the end of 2008. His answer? "5 to 10 thousand"

A lot of $200 day rate reds for 2009.

LOL! Finner!
Have to agree, though.

This is audio bizz all over.In the end, it's not the equipment you will get paid for....

I've said for a year or so:
Soon it won't be an advantage to have a Red, but it will be a disadvantage NOT to dispose these kind of tools.

Gunleik

i would guess that there are 5-10,000 X camera's ( some sony/panasonic video hand size model) out there and you don't see rental on those at $25 day ....
IE: how many DVX, HVX, sony models are out there ? = add up all the models and i still see 200-350 day for those ....

unless 200 day is you what you're planning to ask ?

I was thinking $225. I dont want producers to get the idea that I am cheap.

Due to the greater operational skills required to use a camera like the RedOne (which impacts the potential renter pool) and the fact that even with a minimal kit (one Red Power Pack, one general purpose lens like the RED 18-50mm, screw on ND set, CF cards) the cost is between $25 -30K new, I think the day rate for dry rentals will remain north of $400/day no matter how saturated the market gets.

Of course in the bigger picture, the real issue for most folks is rent vs buy. The clientele I wish to service rents to insure they have properly maintained gear exactly when and where they need it and can pick the package they need for each project.

In the indie film world or low budget docos there may be cases of long term rentals that work out to as little as $200/day but as an owner operator that sounds less like a business plan than a charity thing.
