i have an elgato h264 encoder and am disapointed with it. unless someone can enlighten me on how to adjust the settings so it actually produces stuff as good as when i use quicktime pro, i will just throw the elgato away.

and if that is the case, is there any other realtime h264 encoding solution out there that produces professional results?

Zak, I may be mistaken but I believe the elgato h264 encoder will accelerate Quicktime H.264 encodes. It's not limited to the software elgato provides and works with any Quicktime based applications.

Ya a lot of Matrox equipment has their H264 accelerator built into it. I saw a youtube video somewhere showing the difference.

My experience is that the Elgato Turbo264HD produces VERY good results in a very fast way. it is really a very good product for macbookpro's and imac's.
what settings did you use? what settings in QT player that gives better results?
what was your original file? a prores or redproxy?

Zak,

If you've got the money, there are plenty of good ones out there. I think best of breed are the units from Telairity - www.telairity.com.They are expensive, but if what you want is consistent, high-quality H.264 - these are the ones to go for.

(Disclaimer - Telairity and ASSIMILATE are sister companies)

Following the discussion, even if it's not realtime, what are people using to encode a Prores file to an excellent h264 file on Mac ? QT Pro just sucks, bad gamma, bad color shifts. Compressor too, you can open a QT file and it will different in every Mac application, it's just a nightmare...

elgato only makes blocky stuff even at "best" quality. i cant seem to find a way to customize it, it only seems to allow from the presets, which suck. same with using elgato with quicktime player, you still enter this lame "elgato mode" through quicktime player where all you can choose is some presets.

the matrox wont work cuz my towers totally full of cards

will check out the telairity. lucas do you know which one is the one for just compressing files on my computer (1080 pro res masters) i dont need the hdsdi stuff or anything like that, just data..
