  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EX1 vs. RED

2) The zoom lens: is it possible to rise the zoom by fix steps (need to have on both cameras the same zoom level), if not then RED wins here

The zoom does have a remote socket, so in theory it might be possible.

3) is it possible to gen-lock the 2 EX1 cameras? If not then RED wins here too

Yes, I believe it is.

I'm not sure the EX1 was designed for 3d stereoscopic filming.

except for an Australian underwater camera which has inbuild lens-shift, I don't think there is any camera DESIGNED for s-3D.

The EX1 seems like the perfect sidekick for the RED one. Buy both and it's a win-win!

I love the EX-1

I Love the RED too, but it is difficult to use on some run and gun jobs, they are totally different camera's

It is the 1st small form factor Sony I have had, up till now I have always had Panasonics.

Smart people that do not need to buy a camera right now for work will wait till NAB as I guess there will be some good stuff fron JVC and Panasonic, but I think Sony was smart to time there relese when they did as it sort of filled a gap in the market.

Never though about the 3d option but I guess it makes sense, how important is shallow DOF in 3d? Does it show as much as in 2d?

Traditional wisdom is you want very little shallow DOF in 3D. If the eye wants to focus on something in the foreground, it is upsetting if that thing is blurry.

When I was designing the title sequence for the Hannah Montana movie I found it helped the 3D effect to keep everything in focus. I also used less motion blur than usual.

However, I think you could definitely use selective focus in 3D - IF you do it very well - so as to direct everyone's eyes in the right place.

The cameras everyone uses at the moment are F23, F900, Silicon Imaging, and now, Red.

The only real "brand name" so far is the PaceCam - eg a camera rig from Vince Pace. Note that this isn't camera-specific though - he'll use various different cameras. He really knows what he's doing and I learnt a lot from him on Hannah.

That said, I look forward to seeing what ol' Steve and Gibby are up to!

If this thing could do 60fps progressive at 1080p, it would be the HVX killer.

It still baffles the mind that no one has built a prosumer 1080p camera that can do higher framerates.

EX-1? It can do 60fps at 1080p.... Unless there's something I missed?

Nope, only 720p. Alternatively you can shoot 60i and do a smart deinterlace to get 60p. Effective resolution depends on how much is moving (but then, if something is moving a lot, chances are there's a load of motion blur). I've done that a bunch of times with various HD cameras...

Tom's Challenge to the Electronics World: Build a tapeless 1080p prosumer camera that can shoot high framerates.

Does it really take ten years to do this? Once we hit the 720/60p threshold with the HVX, I figured it would another year or two max... but so far, nothin.

And also NO FIXED LENS

In normal flat screening you can use the shallow DOF to give the feeling of depth. In s-3D a shallow DOF reduces for the audience the viewing freedom of experimenting the depth by "walking" through the canvas with their eyes. So it is somehow the opposite.

On the other side objects which are far away disturb a lot if they are too sharp, specially if the inter-ocular distance (called base) during shooting was too narrow and therefor the back-ground objects have no s-3D effect. So here a shallow DOF becomes very useful again.

To learn and exercise my self in s-3D, I rigged 2 consumer 1080p Panasonic HDC-SD5 cameras together. I shoot everything I can get in front of the camera. There are hundreds of variables to consider and often I just think it is almost useless, BUT then again you can get images which are astonishing! i.e. the colors, the textures of materials you can see are something indescribable, or a simple cat which walks on a Persian rag is .... ah...

Apparently the EX1 is capable of a full 10 stops of latitude recording 8 bit to cards. Could this mean that going 10bit hd-sdi out you could reach 11 stops, closely rivaling red? If you go through all the trouble to record an hd-sdi signal through whatever set up you've got, I sure hope you could gain another stop of latitude.

My tests put red near 9 stops of lattitude, no where near the 11.

Count the stops however you like, the ex1 does not rival red in any category except maybe auto focus speed.
