Were shooting a concert next month 5 cameras 2 jibs ect...
there too cheap to rent a Red off me so were looking at 5 Sony EX1's

I've never worked with one yet but hear good things about them.

The question is.....how is the latitude on them...is it comparable in low light to some of the 2/3 ccd sony and panny's
I have to shoot an orchestral concert that that may be lit somewhat dark...

we'll be switching them to an HDCam deck so the whole HDV issue is a moot point, just using them with SDI out

right not HDV

I forgot....still mpeg2, but 4:2:2 instead of 4:2:0 and up to 35mbs

XDCAM EX is full raster 4:2:0. XDCAM HD422 is full raster, 4:2:2 at 50mbs.

EX1 and EX3 are good cameras. You should be fine. The workflow is simple.

The EX-1 has great low light capabilities, I've seen several night time videos of it and they've looked very clean.

I'd swap out the HDCAM deck for a Flash XDR if you can find one. Did some brief testing with a local unit yesterday 1920x1080, 4:2:2 50mbs direct to .mov coming off an EX-3, to CF cards. 100mbs option if you want it. 318min record time @ 50mbs 4x 32Gb CF card.
