  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EWok hunting with Jarred's new 24mm bulletproof lens.

On the product page, which I linked to on the first page of replies:

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

THE LENS BUILT TO TAKE A BEATING
The heart of the GDU 24mm is a Canon 24mm F2.8 optical block stripped down to its core and then built back up with an armored precision machined mil spec 7075 Aluminum housing.

The manual focus ring has been completely removed to avoid accidental focus adjustments and all movement is regulated to it’s internal STM motors for remote focus and iris control.

An electronic Stainless Steel Canon EF mount finishes off the rear and out front the GDU 24mm Includes a 37mm protective UV filter inset within a a 46mm non-threaded protective ridge.

Phil, you forgot Jeff's (most important!) point as well.. it looks damn cool. :) seriously, is there anyone out there that doesn't want to run and gun at least once with one of these on the front of their RED?? who cares what you're shooting!!

Seems like a cool lens.

With "The manual focus ring has been completely removed to avoid accidental focus adjustments and all movement is regulated to it’s internal STM motors for remote focus and iris control." focus can only be done through FoolControl? Also interested in the response time of FoolControl focusing.

Also with "Super 35mm / APS-C coverage" is there 6k vignetting on Dragon?

I can't compute "cool looking" as a selling point for a lens...
Not distroying a 150$ lens is not the most important if you destroy a 50'000$ camera.
I must really be missing the point.

wouldn't a piece of tape keep you from accidentally refocusing?

Add a clear filter and a rubber lens hood and you are protected for a lot of scenarios - and if the crash is much worse you probably have bigger problems than your $150 lens

fyi, dont try to put this lens on a 5D! doesnt even fit the mount and damages the little rubber weather proofing, thankfully jarred took care of me and got it fixed for free.

Is there a trick to using auto-focus with this lens? Tried it with the SW Monochrome and things just look soft. I'm wanting to use it in my underwater housing so no fool control or other remote focus is available. I have a button set up for Single AF but it's hunting around like crazy and then locks onto something random. How about Continuous AF? Spot Focus? Anyone have suggestions???
