Hello,

When I look through my EVF it sometimes showes what I can describe like a solarized image or color compression start showing on things. If I un plug the cable and put it back on sometimes this dissapears but sometimes it just stays there. Why is it doing this ?
Also the Dark Detail settinhg doesn't seem to maximise anything when in dimply lit spaces. All I see it does is giving a little bit more contrast to the image and making it looking better actually. With DD turned off the image is a bit washed out as there are no blacks anywhere in the image. I also don't see why the seeting goes all the way to 50% when the effect is at it's maximum at about 2% and it just stays there no matter what aseeintg I choose.

You shooting in cold temperatures? When temps drop below 50 degrees F, my EVF starts acting crazy

Well the temperature is pretty low in the morning but after that it rises to normal levels. So it's not because of this. I also noticed it tends to do this in scenes with wide dynamic range and sometimes aside from this effect some green speckels of noise moving randomly across the edges of a shape in a frame start appearing.

I see this in my EVF especially in the darker tones. I live and work in a hot country and have not noticed this artifact relating to cold conditions.

So i guess that's just the way it is then. :undecided:

extreme temps can mess up and type of LCD or viewing item. run a test indoors temp controlled and see if it does the same thing, could be a defective unit if it is still giving u that problem. try changing out ur cabling too see if that helps.

The current EVFs have issues, putting it mildly, and I'm sorry to say Red's never properly addressed this "solarization" issue, as far as I know. I wouldn't hold my breath for a response in this thread. This issue's come up several times before.
Yes, it happens at all temperatures.
It'd be good if the newer model cameras allowed the use of two Red LCD monitors simultaneously.

evf heater barney

evf heater barney

iv had the same issues so im in the process of making a heater barney for the evf(almost done), camera body, hd and batterys... pictures are coming...

I assume it´s not only the temp issue with the EVF. I heard of many people having problems with strange colors in the EVF picture or flickering even in "normal" conditions.

I guess a heater is a good idea, but getting the EVF replaced by the new one as a trade in is certainly a better one.

It can happen regardless of temperature.

try unplugging it, wait a couple seconds to let it think about why it sucks, then plug it back in. that little trick usually can fix that particular nuance/design flaw a lot of times

Hey thanks Blair,

I use that trick quite often and sometimes it works. Still it is something that shouldn´t happen with professional equipment generally. The EVF seems a bit "Beta" and it would be just great if they could think about a trade - in possibility.

Have the same issue here with 3 Reds on Set since 3 Weeks, out of the blue one or the other starts solarizing. Shooting outside in cold condotions all 3 are solarizing for about an hour, then they seem to warm up and work ok for most of the time.
Don´t like this much :(

I also vote for a trade-in ;)

Before we dive into the possible causes of this, a question: Have you spoken to your RED tech support reps?

I have had this problem as well and have not submitted a report directly to anyone at RED - that's on me.

That said - I would rather have a discount on the new bomb EVF than chase gremlins in an EOL product.

Let me be clear. The current EVF, when functioning properly, works quite well. My issue is the EVF's physical size and the necessity of its entire weight being cantilevered out to the side. This is problematic for most hand held configs as balance is the crux of the biscuit for extended operation off the shoulder.

It seems to me that it's important to differentiate between a preference for different operational characteristics, such as a smaller size and weight, and operational problems.

If you have an EVF that is exhibiting "solarizing" you should contact RED tech support.

Fair enough. This was the wrong thread for EVF design discussions, a rather superfluous topic in any case as the completely redesigned Bomb EVF is on its way. I will contact tech support.

Well since Stuart won't tell us how to fix this permanently. Can someone who has talked to tech support chime in and tell us how they told them to fix the problem?

We're looking for solutions to this problem and would love to hear from anyone who has them, including tech support. That's what this forum and this thread is for right? Finding a fix to the EVF solarization issue.

I don't own a Red1 but use it all the time so for me to contact tech support doesn't make any sense. Especially if I can get the answer here.
