Will Scarlet use an EVF or a LCD? If it uses a LCD the camera will be square/rectangular. If it uses an EVF, it could be cylindrical. It can't use the LCD from the RED one. That is just too big. But could it use the EVF from the RED One? Is that too big? I don't care about cost (that much.) Lets vote. How many people want the EVF from the RED One, for Scarlet?

I want Scarlet to be the size of the RED Brick, which would mean using an OLED or LCD. There are lots of cheap cameras that use LCDs. (I like the LCD on my Canon Elph SD1000.) But a 720p EVF would alone make Scarlet a pro. Could the Red team literally build Scarlet around a 720p EVF? That would set Scarlet apart from the rest, as if there were that many 2K pocket cameras out there to begin with.

I vote for LCD. But I am a prosumer who accepts mediocrity, so my opinion doesn't count. The Red team needs to hear from others, especially RED one reservation holders.

how about an optical viewfinder? you'd have to use a real rotating mirror then though or some kind of fiber optic thingy. just using a beam splitter would lose too much light. ay?

LCD is nice but a real VF is an absolute must. I can't really understand why anyone would even consider trading a VF for an LCD. I trust that the Red team is not even considering this question. Red, so far, has been about a professional approach to things and not offering a real VF would break that direction.

Personally, I think that Scarlet should (and will) have both. Why not, most cameras these days do. Red will 'only' do it better.

I would be surprised if there was not an lcd on it, and less surprised with the
absence of of VF. thats the way this market is going. I would like to see both remain part of the design.'

Its better dont give any lcd viewfinder or old display on scarlet i prefer detachable system same like red one that is better to use for proffessional works (like mainstream cinema) with scarlet 2k lcd or evf but i want scarlet with big size and minimum 5 pound havy

I think scarlet is going to reuse things that have already been built for the RED ONE. it makes sense and will give economies of scale and allow the amortization of those technologies much faster

Considering the pocket form factor, I think an LCD would be more useful - particularly a transmissive/reflective LCD that works well in daylight.

The whole idea is mobility for such a device, and there are a lot of places I'd put a camera that small where I simply wouldn't want to crane my neck to look through an EVF.

Having the option to attach the Red EVF would be awesome, but hardly a built-in requirement.

The EVF is the must. The LCD is a very nice bonus.

actually, people who don't need the evf come from a video background. those who don't need an lcd are film. both are pros.

Last time I checked all the high end Pro video and HD cameras are fitted with an EVF. Pro-sumer and consumer video cameras come with the LCD. Pro video cameras and Pro-sumer are not the same.

And Red has clearly shown that "Professional" and "The way it's always been done" aren't the same either.

Ya because red doesn't come with an EVF. Oh wait yes it does!

Thats old thinking though because now modern pro cameras include both like the HPX3000 and HPX2000 and XDCAM F335 and F355 and PDW-700 all have it.

I have found the reason these cameras have the LCD and more people are using them is because the company making the camera cheap out on the EVF and the LCD actually becomes the better option to use. It's not really old thinking its just many new shooters have not had the chance to see through a good EVF. Once a person has seen through a really good EVF you will not want to go back to the LCD. I know a few who had early EVF's and though they had a bit of a color problem the verdict was that it is one of the best if not the best EVF you can buy.

hmmm....just my 2 cents, but...

gorgeous 7 inch screen that two or three people can check out and use for overheads, underhand, or (on a tripod) at arms length

or

EVF, where one person has to lean in or completely block their own face. Try walking along with a documentary subject with your eye pressed to the viewfinder. Possible? Yes. Convenient? Not so much.

Honestly, I see no reason at all for an EVF. And, yes, I consider myself a pro.

And, yes, I consider myself a pro.

The big question is does anyone else?

Ha, just kidding.

What ever people find easiest to do the job is best. I just know there is a lot more quaility and resolution on the EVF and it is much easier to deal with on exteriors. But whatever people find works best.

Point is that you don't have to choose either-or because now they come with both. A really good EVF is an optical one anyway! :bleh:

Arte you talking about the RED LCD because if you are then I have to assume you haven't seen it. Try it out first. Its not 7 inch it's 5.6 inch and it has about 1 degree angle of view, there is no way that three people can check it out at the same time because it has a very limited angle of view and you really have to be looking at it dead on in order fo rit to look good.

I agree with you in principle that a good high-rez wide angle of view LCD is a very useful thing to have on the set. But for a Red One if I could only have the choice of the Red LCD or the EVF there's not a doubt in my mind that the EVF is way preferable. If you need a separate LCD get an HDMI cable and run it to a computer monitor for people on set to use.
