We got our EVF last week and all was working fine until a couple of days ago.

It displays 'EVF not selected' on a black background not matter what we do.

There is a build number as well written: ' V.71128b'

We tried the following steps to fix this problem:
-changing firmware (went from 13 to 14 to 15 and then back to 13)
-trying all possible outputs under monitor menu (trued on both builds 13 and 15)
-using a different cable (the LCD one which appears to be the same connector?)

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks,

Same problem here

Same problem here

Hi everyone,
I know it's been a while since this thread has been posted first. But I currently have exactly the same problem.

When the EVF is connected to the camera I get the promt: "EVF not selected. V.71128b". Only black screen in the back.

Got the EVF back from a feature production. It's definitly the EVF, as an other EVF displays properly and it's also not caused by the cable. Anyone knows how to deal with this and how to select the EVF again. All buttons on the EVF seem to be dead.

Many thanks, guys.

Best,
Sebastian

First try restoring the factory settings in the camera. If that doesnt work Try re-installing the camera firmware. If that doesn't work call RED and ask for an RMA to get your EVF sent in for evaluation.
Good Luck!

EVF "not selected"

EVF "not selected"

Also check that the pins on the EVF cable are not damaged, and plug the EVF back in again.

The fact that the EVF is telling you that its "not selected" means that it is getting power, but the camera does not see communication from it yet...

ready2roll, I would also contact technical support (if you have not done so already) at www.red.com/support to file a trouble ticket. As Stuart mentioned, the EVF is getting power but something is either wrong with the EVF port, the EVF CABLE, or the EVF itself. I would inspect all three for damage since it just came back from a shoot - something happened to it while it was out.

Hi everyone,
thanks for your fast replies. Yes, I have send a trouble ticket.

Stuart, yes I have checked all connections. I can swap to another cable and get the same result, while the other EVF is working with both cables.
And yes I can see the EVF is getting power as the LCD is on (black background) a prompting a message.

Mike, at this point I would not like to reinstall the camera firmware. It seem like an EVF thing, as the same effect can be reproduced on various cameras, where this particular EVF showing the prompt, while other EVFs are working with all cameras.

Would be interesting how Arno solved the same problem... or anyone else having this.

Best,
Sebastian

Did anyone ever figure out the cause of this issue?

I just witnessed two Red owners in the NYC area experience this exact same issue after testing their EVFs on the same body. Our only guess is that the bad body fried the EVF boards.

Anyone have any possible answers?

Mine does it on and off ever since i bought it years ago...i just disconnect it then replug it and it's fine. Just another RED gremlin...that's why i have a bomb evf on order...i'm just wondering if it will be bomb evf or my VF FF that arrives first:)

Something more sinister is going on with these EVFs. They show no signs of working, even intermittently.

I think Curt might win that race.

Mine has always done this - but I never bothered to care since once the booting is complete, everything is fine... Is this an actual problem to be concerned with?

"EVF not selected" means that EVF is getting power, but not data. Could be cable, EVF itself, port on camera - contact tech support to help.

Hi Shawn,

Me too, mine has always done this but about halfway through boot the error message disappears and everything works as it should.

I've seen this exact behavior on a number of rental cameras I've shot with as well.

Hi Shawn and Stephen:

Mine has always done this as it is booting and then it goes away and works fine. I just always assumed it was part of the boot cycle. You know, if it ain't broke, don't fix it :–)

My EVF has always booted up with this warning, but then goes away and works properly; since June of 2008. Is this normal for the EVF?

Here too. Seems like its just part of the boot process to me too.

Interesting variation on this - a Panavision rental Red MX EVF, no LCD plugged in. Camera firmware v30.7.0

EVF works fine in camera mode, but as soon as Playback is selected we get a black display and error message "EVF not selected. V.80821b".

Replugged cables, changed cables, rebooted camera - same behaviour. Can't see any bent pins or visually obvious connector or cable damage.

Red Pro 7" LCD with same cable is fine.

Later - also very temperamental about displaying picture after magnify (displaying black a lot).
Hmmm. Pretty sure this is an EVF fault.

Same Problem..
Sending it in for a look as we speak.
I'd love to know what causes that, so we can prevent doing what we may doing wrong...
This is the 3rd time we have sent ours back now.

I have got the same disease today : My EVF worked perfectly until these last days. I have got the "EVF not selected v711285" too, but it is not black, it is like snow

I changed the cable : the same
I changed the EVF with the bomb EVF : no problem with same cables

I love my old EVF. I would like it to work again. Any help would be nice.
Anyway, I will open a Red ticket immediatly.
