  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EVF advice (Can't afford Bomb)

I tried my Zacuto EVF Pro with my Scarlet-X and found that the screen is somehow under/overscan. Anyone knows how to fix that? I sent an email to Zacuto but haven't heard any reply yet.

By the way, the EVF has been updated to latest version.

I think if you go into the monitor settings in the scarlet and switch res/htz rate that fixed it on mine.

Thanks everyone.

Anyone using the carbonite scope off an arm while shoulder rigged, I'd love to see or hear about your setup.

@ Dominic, how you finding your Zacuto?

@ David, thank mate, really appreciate your time posting those findings. I was unaware of the slight pin cushioning with the DP4. Thanks for that. The DP4 can take a 1080 60 feed which the Zacuto can't apparently. So struggling to choose between them.

@ Bob, thanks for the ink. I think. Kind of love and hate that you posted that :) The price is pretty amazing. Which of course worries me. Plus I'm a total wuss and try to avoid being an early adopter. The general specs seem on par with the zacuto, cineroid and dp4, though it has (higher power draw) and how that translates into actual usage and build quality who knows... Have to be saving money somewhere right? I also can't find anything more in depth on their site, so I'm writing to ask for clarification on some of the features/ppi etc. I'll update here in case anyone's interested.

@ Mike G, Hey mate, yeah been a while! Hope all's happy and well for you :) Linked in, ahhhhhh yes lmao.... something like that. Open browser, do you want to endorse video production? Well sure... and it just keeps going... and going... and going. I think I pulled the pin on endorsing you somewhere around Hula dancing I seem to recall. Though if you have a vimeo link of your skills I'm happy to rectify that too.

The res of Bobs posted EVF is 800 x 480 like the touch, but not sure about the PPI and it is a bit hard to believe the Zacuto or DP4 would not be superior options.

Heh. The waiting for flip mount. Nice :) I'm thinking after a 9 inch arm and loupe I might as well buy a dedicated EVF. Be useful being able to have an AC pulling focus off the touch while I'm operating etc... But it was always my first desire to just use the touch and a loupe, Bjorn's power point is valid too.

You have a bit of a knack for indie rigging that performs well, any suggestions on the arm and mounting of the Touch. (Wouldn't be hanging it off my MB)

Best

Hey Lliam and everybody,

I wanted to clarify that the pin cushioning on the DP4 EVF is caused solely by the eyepiece. The image on the screen is perfect. Plus, the pin cushion isn't fatal, it's just slightly noticeable. It sounds like you're using your rig solely for yourself (as opposed to a hire) so the diopter would be set once for yourself and then left alone. I chose the DP4 and will post some more about it once I've used it for a bit.

I like my zacuto. I ended up selling it in a package to get an epic, but i do miss having it. my only gripe was the contrast and color was always dramatically different from what i saw on the touch screen. I wouldnt base any of my lighting and color on it.

Liam , I can do Hula dancing ; )

A carbon-ite scope either from Grid or Oxide plus plus a nato arm & mounting a point will be around $700 ( from memory your cam hasn't got cheeseplate on the top ) Hence if your watching the dollars, I reckon Bob's suggestion will come in the cheapest at a price of $375 plus nato arm & mounting point.

Or alternately buy one 2nd hand like this Zacuto one on ebay, auction ends tomorrow......

@ David, thanks for that clarification. People seem to prefer the look off the Zacuto I think due to the same pixels at 3.2 and i've heard "better" colour. But as Dominic just mentioned, whose looking to base lighting or colour off their EVF anyway. Focus assist is more important to me, and in this regard the Dp4 seems to trump. Pass through is also great. So I think I may well be joining you.

Thanks Dominic.

Cheers James.

@ Hula Mike, to think I ever doubted. :)) Man, you're bang with my reasoning in all regards. And no top plate in my current config and that Zacuto is already on my watch list :)) Though it has two burn spots on the screen. Not too obtrusive though... so I'm still half tempted. Thanks for your feedback Mike, always much appreciated.

The GRID come with gigantic warnings about burning your touchscreen if the sun happens to poke through the eyepiece, thus rendering your touchscreen useless. It's a piece of glass you could pop out to fry ants on the sidewalk. I saw this and got rid of it.

It also uses magnets to attach the monitor. Here too, do you ever put speakers near a monitor? Magnets and monitors don't mix.

for these two reasons I decided I did not want to risk using the GRID on my camera, because I could fry my viewfinder in 5 seconds of in attentiveness.

I am now considering the cinema oxide because it has a diopter and this might limit the dangers presented by the less expensive GRID.

Yeah definitely very important considerations in using Loupes. So easy just to gorget for a moment in the hustle and bustle of shooting. And can obviously happen incredibly quickly...

SmallHD suggests besides obvious safety protocols - lens cap on, always raise loupe when not shooting etc - that using an ND.6 can help reduce risk and even improve viewing quality. But this is still not a "solution" obviously. Does make me prefer to have a cheaper screen there rather than my Touch tbh, but good protocols to look after your equipment are obviously all part and parcel anyhow.

I didn't know a diopter was helpful in this regard though David? How does that work? The focal point of magnification may not fall on the screen? I know the SmallHD diopter is also UV filter... But that doesn't stop "heat".

@ David

Don't all diopters & Evfs carry this risk ?

Agreed about the Grid & its capacity to burn, I got around the problem with mine by getting some of those eyepiece pads...they reduce the exposed glass real estate significantly. However any diopter has the capacity to burn even on EVFs. From my TV days I remember many a Sony viewfinder with the problem. As to the current RED EVFs......I'm not sure.

The DP4 is THE BEST EVF I have used SPECIFICALLY FOR ACHIEVING FOCUS on the 5D and Epic. I've shot plenty of 5D and Epic job where I've been handheld and pulled my own focus and the PEAKING function in the DP4 is great. Coupled with the FOCUS tool on the Epic it is easy to pick sharps. WAY better than the Bomb for finding focus. I would not hesitate to recommend it. Also, the non-metal made out of tree brand EVF mount has an adapter that comes with it to support the DP4- it is AMAZING!!!

Ahhahaa! + 2 on your WC description Eric.

Thanks for the feedback Eric, focus is the priority, so that's a greatly appreciated glowing review.

@ Mike, that Zacuto EVF pro went for $670. You can get a new DP4 bundle for that. Or a second hand EVF with two burn spots on the screen... Seems bonkers to me.

Luv Ebay so wildly inconsistant.....an EVF with 2 burn marks instead of DP4 new for the same price.....go figure.

@ Ben, That is one cheap EVF ........man for that price buy one, no good junk it! According to the specs it has higher rez than DP4......if you believe specs that is.

Hi Christopher,
Will the touchscreen function of the Zacuto EVF work with a Red One MX?

revisiting this topic.

I can afford a BT BOMB EVF but would rather put that towards my EPIC ugprade.

how are the DP4-EVF users holding out?

I use a RED LCD 5" and have far-sighted issues.

sad when the most important tool during my shoots are my reading glasses :(

any info would be helpful.

I too am shopping for an EVF. I would hope to get better edge peaking, with a strong red edge 'crackle' to show the parts in focus, a bit like a Canon DSLR viewfinder running magic lantern.

The issue I have is all the ones I saw are a measly 800 or 1000 pixels across. Give me a break. Mounting an LCD from the mobile phone parts supply chain into a 'little TV monitor' and then clipping on a loupe is Ghetto big. 1920x1080 microdisplays have been out for a while now, and this is what needs to be engineered into a 'bomb' style compact case. Nice and small. Red is using a microdisplay in both bomb EVF's but it's only 1280 across. I'd spring for the LCOS bomb, but the monochrome Lcos display strobed with RGB led has low contrast, and you can't plug it into the HDMI port. Red touch and bomb use a DVI ( hdmi) signaling style to pass the video signal from the camera. It might be that a simple cable adapter would let the Bomb plug directly into the HDMI port, with a DC power from a Dtap or something.

I'll stick with my Grid on the touch for now, and wait for a 1920 EVF. The only issue I have with grid is that the focus edging on the Red is too weak for my taste. But it is 800 across, if I'm not mistaken, as 'sharp' as most of the mini TV monitor stuff out there.
