OK, almost a newbie question and embarrassed to ask: Using the Dragon for the first time, my image in the EVF is horrible, flat no contrast. Can I adjust this without altering the image going to the DIT? If yes, step by step instructions please? Thank you in advance.

Hi Ted,

You can send different looks / gamma spaces to differ met monitors on dragon. If you have a +1 module, for example, you can set the rear EVF to DG3 (this is what I do) and put RAW on the red touch.

in fact, you might just have the RAW viewing mode on?

I don't have my camera on me presently but I think this is all located in:
Settings - Look - colour / Gamma - monitor control - then select graded or neutral.

In fact, I've just found this video!:

hope this helps!

pS you can also turn off / add guides in this menu section to your EVF too.

Thank you, I think my operators did select the "graded" option but there was no change in the evf look at all. What are we doing wrong?

Great instructional video, I think that might do it. Going to work soon soon, thank you!

Just watched the video, I think the guys did not check the "Independent Display Lut" box which explains why, maybe, checking the "Graded" box for the evf did nothing to the evf LUT.

Hi Ted,

Yes the tick box has caught me out a few times too. Now I've got used to it, I love this function. Kudos for Red for pulling this off a few years ago. Really helps with the producer / client "why am I paying x amount for this camera when this image looks so awful" thing.
The REDCAST goes one better as it can input 3DLUTs for the ultimate client monitor. Altentatively (& more cheaply!) use an odyssey 7Q which can input 3DLUTs and show this as the client monitor. You can make some great 3DLUTs using FilmConvert. Can't wait to use these with KipperTie's LowCon OLPF's.

PS here is another great video on saving Red Looks to camera via redmag / redcineX. This is really handy too.

Been using this a lot recently matching stereo 3D cameras (de-greening the mirror colour cast on one camera) - best matched in-camera image on a beamsplitter we have ever achieved and it's still a non-destructive not-baked in RAW image that can be further tweaked if need be. This is what RED's are truly great for.

And you can load these now through FoolControl OSX. So quick!

PSS different Red EVF's have different black / contrast levels. I have a bomb LCOS EVF & an original RED EVF. The bomb isn't as sharp and the black levels look better on the original RED EVF (but it's a heavy large beast!). I've used an OLED EVF too which the black levels didn't look quite as good as the Bomb EVF (not sure why?) but the mids are WAY BRIGHTER and much sharper image (which is probably a more important attribute as an EVF).

This is true also for touchscreens (the 7" & 9" are much better in terms of sharpness plus a bit better re: black levels than the 5"). Though you can change EVF sharpness now through Settings - Look - Sharpness but be careful as this comes down the HDSDI pipe!

Point is that you want to check the EVF image (what the EVF is doing to your image) before you set LUTs!

Love my RED One EVF on my Dragon (it has an ET eye leveller mount which are STILL the best EVF mount for RED) but be careful as some Original RED EVF's don't work (I think it depends on what firmware / hardware version they are running / whether you have a newer one or not). I accommodate for the weight by running Redvolts & sidehandle & nothing else! It's so good in fact, I have made a LUT based on the image that comes out of my RED EVF to match the r3ds it records.
