  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Everything you wanted to know about the EPIC Canon Mount

Verrry interesting, thanks Jarred. Someone's going to have to create a database of "fast focusing Canons."

Hi Jarred, I am completely scared of the focus dilemma it has meant for me to get into the Scarlet-X system, I actually wanted the safety net of the 2/3rds. I have decided to embrace the system, and I am hoping that the autofocus will play a role in certain situations, certainly not all. Are there any hints you can give us as how the autofocus can help during motion recording? Obviously in still mode, it will work as a still camera, but, is there a system by which it could actually hold focus on moving objects, or maybe, recalibrate focus if a button is kept pressed for a short time? Or a cropped window which shows an enhanced image for judging focus? (Magic Lantern, an independent software for Canon HDSLRs, has this, it's very useful). I know many will just say "get a focus puller", sure, I will for certain productions, but I am thinking of more difficult productions where one might not be as fortunate....thanks

BTW, I have L Canon Glass (24-70), (70-200) and Tokina (11-16)

Hi Tom,

Not sure what you mean by support. Don' t they just work?

I have the 2x extender and assumed it would.

Antony

No, when you put the 2x extender on a Canon lens, you lose control of the iris. On my camera, it defaults to f/11 or something like that, so I cannot really use the extender in low light. I have some specific shots of the moon coming up that I need a 2x extender for, so I am hoping this happens soon.

Hey Jarred, how does using a manual focus lens on the Canon mount impact the Red workflow?

Depends on the lens you are using. If its the Zeiss ZE lenses I believe you will get some metadata, like what lens you are using. But I don't think it will give you what distance you are focused out to. It shouldn't impact the RED workflow at all. Most you will have to do is manually focus your lens.

I'm sure that wish can be granted. It wouldn't be a problem for RED to hold your Scarlet until this feature is released... :)

Hehe,
I'm actually going to use a PL mount and a few lenses I have left from my R1 until I can get one of the $500 Canon mounts shipped to me (yes, I ordered a Canon mount Scarlet -it's complicated!).

On the metadata: currently Canon lenses are giving on screen readouts of focus distance and focal length in selectable units, but its not showing up in the metadata, although there's a field for it. Focal length, aperture and mount type all show up in metadata, and are functional for Canon and PL i-data enabled lenses. I have seen occasional failures of that data though, with values freaking out to 65535.

Will the canon ef-s 17-55mm 2,8 will worlk also ?

Yes, as found in Jarreds very first post on the topic:

-Here is a list of Canon lenses that have been programed into the mount/ Epic Brain. These still need to be characterized for fine-tuned autofocus as they all have different motor speeds etc., but they are and will be functional out of the gate when the Canon mount ships.

Image Stabilization is functional on the entire stabilized lens lineup.
