  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Everything you wanted to know about the EPIC Canon Mount

What's the availability like in Europe for this mount? Being an Englishman I'll need one in the UK asap once I have my beautiful Epic-X. It's so much easier buying from Alan from RED in London where import duty and shipping has been dealt with etc.

I might be out of the loop but the info I'm looking for I can't find. It appears that both the PL and Canon mount are equals in materials and share identical prices. So is Red offering the option of lens mount choices for folks when purchasing their Epic-X? It would be a shame to moth ball a $2000 titanium PL mount but that's what's going to happen in my case.
It has been addressed. :)

IMO that's a very cine-centric analysis.
Hi Steve,

Yes, that is a very cine-centric analysis. That being said, there is no doubt in my mind that the Canon mount is going to be exceptionally popular for both ENG and cine-style approaches. If nothing else, the cost of the glass alone will push it.

The original post I quoted said "many of us think that the still glass can look amazing without the expense and weight of PL." This is true. I was simply pointing out that there is more to the equation than just being able to resolve an image well. You are correct in stating that still glass does have its advantages in certain applications.

Best,

Haakon

Its all good Haakon...

Red One gave us a good diversity of choices on lenses, field workflow, and styles of shooting. But now Epic and Scarlet really jack the diversity of choices up into the stratosphere.

I'm thinking that of these new Red camera models the Scarlet Fixed will be the camera that beyond its EFP, some stills, and some cine usage, be used significantly in ENG (electronic news gathering). But it should be great for mobile EFP (electronic field production), as obviously will Epic with the Canon, Nikon, and Red Electronic mounts.

If someone is trying to shoot pure cine style with Epic using a Canon mount and Canon lenses they have some significant workarounds ahead in terms of AC familiarity, follow focus selection, witness marks, etc. The Canon mount and lenses are naturally much better suited to styles of production that eye focus and/or use AF at times - namely EFP, hybrid, and stills.

The above said, I agree that cost savings alone will drive medium to smaller budget cine style productions using Epic to experiment with the possibilities of using the Canon, Nikon, and Red Electronic mounts and lenses. But then if they're doing pure cine style they'd still be using electronic mounts with electronic lenses for an all-manual style of shooting. If they then do any eye focusing or use any AF, then technically they'd be shooting hybrid EFP style while operating that way. Especially among indies I expect to see a lot of "shooting style convergence" with Epic and Scarlet - because the combination of technology, electronic mount choices, and electronic lens choices will really enable crossover experimentation.

Epic and Scarlet enable lots of style and equipment options for everyone to consider...gotta love that!

Cheers,

Steve

Can't wait to have my Canon mount. :-)

Thumbs up RED Team for your amazing work. You guys are Rockstars.

Not in Stage 2 or 3, but Stage 4, and concurrent non-packaged deals, yes.

Cool... :-)

Thanks for clearing this up. I never understood why a Stage 4 couldn't choose the mount (you were obviously always referring to Stage 2 and 3). Makes perfect sense.

Just placed my order. Hope there are still enough for the first batch.
I'm looking forward to the Redmote Pro. This thing will be a huge gamechanger if it works better than the Birger Mount.
Don't get me wrong, the Birger works pretty good. But RED could make it fly big time.

Here is my suggestion - just a suggestion, not a request for freebies (hate that!)

I plan to buy an EPIC-S as a 2nd camera to my EPIC-M - this is in lieu of the two EPIC-X cameras that I originally signed up for through early RED ONE ownership. My S will be permanently Canon-ized and will serve as a back-up body.

What I would love to see - and what might be fair and also allow for mounts to be reused/recycled, is to see a completely mount-less/mount-free EPIC-S option offered by RED.

That way I can keep my EPIC-M with its PL mount permanently attached and keep a 2nd camera permanently Canon-ized. No wasted mounts here, ultimately.

This would also allow for a slight price reduction to EPIC-S owners, so many of whom are stretching up from original SCARLET pricing - a lot of inexpensive new or lightly used PL mounts could hit that market and offset some of the price increase. (Also Canons, that may not have seen as much action as anticipated - not mine, though! Also Nikons, when they start hitting the aftermarket...)

With some patience with the process, everyone could win, including the environment (so that RED is not manufacturing "paperweights"). Extra mounts could be recycled to new cameras down the road. Early M/X adopters could pick up a coupla bucks for purchasing more than one mount in the early part of the game. EPIC-S adopters could save a few bucks down the road. Everything ultimately gets used. This gives RED plenty of time to sort through all of their production issues, as Jarred mentioned.

It may even allow them to sell a few more S cameras, if the used mount market is as robust as everyone claims it will be. For those who are reaching to buy the S, an extra five hundred or thousand bucks, or whatever the savings is, on a used mount, could go a long way.

I've already put in my Canon mount order, so I have no particular investment in the outcome either way. Until the S comes out, I'll be happily swapping away. But it does seem like a possible win-win, to put out a mountless S option, to sop up all of those mounts and give users a chance to save a bit of money, while letting RED have plenty of time to realize this option without throwing a wrench in their forward movement with the delivery of all of these cameras.

I think this is a great Epic X suggestion too since the mounts can both be bought separate in the store.

Technically, the Epic X Stage 2 and Stage 3 cameras are being sold without mounts. The Ti PL mount is being included in the freebies package.

The reason that I think it is a better to limit the idea to the S user base is that:

1) it gives them time to sort out production issues, as already mentioned by Jarred - most important is, make it work for RED...

2) it prevents the various levels of X purchaser base of complaining that one class of purchaser got something they did not...RED doesn't really need to listen to more of that.

3) it tosses a bone to the S class, most of whom who have not had access to RED ownership, whereas X users are primarily previous RED owners - also S class has been subject to price increases (as well as systems upgrades) as they have waited for a cinema incarnation of SCARLET, so a little price relief would be a good thing.

Back focus issues, especially with wide-angle zooms like Canon's 10-22, were and still are heart breaking and maddening. I understand that the Red's new mount will make back focus adjustment not only fast and easy but maybe even FUN (in retrospect.)

My question is: How is it done?

You can buy a mount less Epic-M starting in 2 weeks, and a mount less Epic-X after the first 2 stages are taken care of.

you put a torx wrench in a hole on the top of the EPIC brain and spin it till your back focus is set.. regardless of what mount you have.

Gotta love simplicity!

I don't know if it is possible, but REDFOCUS in PL, NIKON and CANON becomes a very attactive piece of gear if it is even possible.

PS: I know I asked this before but if it could work it would make mount swaps and BF adjustments super easy and extend the use of an existing tool.

Every order placed in the EU will automatically be redirected to Red Europe, so that is great. (ordered mine yesterday, Alan was also working on Saturday...)

Doesn't matter where you ordered it from.. just when you ordered it. If you are mount deposit guy #3 on the list and ordered it in London, the 3rd mount off the line will be shipped to the UK and sold through Alan. No more of that Janky "USA customers first" hoarding on parts that used to happen along time ago :)
