  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Everything is changing! Only marketing is eternal! New Epic price is it good or bad?

Never mind if it's good or bad for camera owners... it is bad for the world! Today, apparently in sympathy with RED dropping the price of the Epic, the stock market dropped the price of the Dow. Seems like everything is getting less expensive. Yea! (I don't have stocks.) '-)

Wouldn't make any sense to do as the real price drop is more like 15% -20% and that the images delivered is still kinda the same.

Fortunately most rental houses knows their maths better than a few verbal RedUsers around...

But I do not know.
If they didn't have customers for the cams allready... This is a good time to drop the rates.
I have to admit I was being somewhat tounge and cheek. I expect the rates actually have not fallen. The big question remains how will owner/operators respond to this price drop. If they hold steady with their rates and don't feel pressured to drop their rates right away, then the main issue becomes resale value, which is important for sure but is hopefully long term issue and not short term for most.

Just curious as I haven't checked myself yet. Have rental companies dropped their Epic rates by 50% since the price drop. I"m talking about the major rental houses such as Rule/Boston Camera, Abel, Panavision, Keslow, etc.

Rental house are already essentially giving the bodies for almost nothing after they discount, you're paying for the lenses and aks. I dont think much will change there.

For the owner ops, they will definitely fall, but not until the market gets even more saturated than it already is. With the cost halved, a whole lot more people will have them, and demand isn't really changing much. And with the new Sony offerings and Panavision camera that's to be released soon, I think rates for owner ops will be abysmal.

i have had major DP's go red over Alexa, NOT because I am some onesighted RedHead (Jim knows that, that has pissed him off a number of times...) but because it is the best choice. And now I am talking R1... At 4k a pop...

Says the guy with 8,000 posts on Reduser...

And it's the best choice for every job? Is one film stock the best choice for every job? Don't pretend to be unbiased. I like the Red for certain looks, but it is certainly not the best choice for every job.

Hi Alex.

I did not say "for every job"
But RED cameras are quite veratile...

If you choose between Alexa prores and RED, I'd say that RED is more often the best choice.

If you have read any of my posts, you'll know that I think Alexa RAW is very good.

The cameras perform differently under different contrast situations.

Do you want me to elaborate?

I just want to point out that the perception that Alexa is allways is thebest choice, isn't neccesarily right.

For most of what I do, It wouldn't be.
But I have no problems seeing different perspectives to that...

But thanks!

:-)

I've owned a couple of pro cameras by now, and there is only one camera that has depriciated less than the Epic/Scarlet, and that is the Red One.

R1-MX, a high-end motion imaging tool "good enough" for the cinema screen and upcoming standards, went from $ 24 000 to $ 4 000 straight from the manufacturer and reached EOL few years after it was introduced. Compared to this Epic's price drop is miniscule.

As far as the voting goes, the question is incomplete, and answer depends on the position and experience in the market segment.

You don't honestly think anybody bought a RED One in the last 9 months do you? Probably very few sold in last 18 months.
The Battle tested cameras are used, not the same as buying new.

They also forgot the "I dont give two shits about this price drop"... which I would argue the majority of people fall into
