  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Everything changes...

New policy is little to no specs until ready to ship. They didn't say they wouldn't announce announcements.

Do you really think the guys at RED don't understand the importance of the 11/03/11 target?

I think RED's notion of 'everything changes' is less a marketing strategy and more a muscular, type-A, reminder of reality. If you've been waiting for Scarlet, it's probably not your favorite term (yet, i hope =) but it's honest and usually the results are awesome.

Jim,

While I get the intent behind the "everything changes" philosophy, I fail to see why anyone would want to use this (from a marketing perspective).

Every time I read this, all that resonates in my head is "you can't rely on ANY announcements we make", which sounds very negative. I know that's not what RED means, but that's how it's perceived on the receiving end for many. I perceive this as a marketing "get out of jail for free" card.

For example, you've just posted about the upcoming November 3rd announcements, Jarred posted that Scarlet will ship before the end of the year. All very pleasant news to read, but those announcements immediately get crushed under the "everything can change" steam roller.

Another example: even if it's 100% certain (on your end) that Scarlet ships by the end of the year, we all know that until it actually ships, this announcement is meaningless, as are any and all other announcements.

Again, the intent behind the "everything changes" is fine, but it has so much negative implications that (I suspect most of us) it ruins any announcements that would otherwise get us pumped.

Lastly, you've recently posted about how RED will now only make announcements when it's ready to ship. Well in that case, doesn't this make the "everything changes" completely unnecessary?

Denis

Just go to the RED store. Mostly everything for sale there is available today or you can order it today.

OK Denis, that's how you perceive it. Now some facts to throw into the mix .... Four years ago Red basically did not exist, now Four years later we see all the products offered on their company website. All this time Jim has been advising us that conditions are subject to change with little advance notice. This is because RED is at the cutting edge of Digital Cinema, the Battle Field is fluid. This is an all volunteer Army. You are welcome to stay on the sidelines until after the dust settles.

I think you can assume it applies to everything we have in the works. Our competition has responded to where they think we are going. That changed a long time ago. :-)

Jim

That's worth waiting for! There has only been good news out of Red recently. Any scarlet critics only has to look and Epic news and have red your road map to get all the details we need now. Things are in motion now and the light is coming up on the horizon. If we have been told on thing about scarlet and it changes, it is only going to make it better. Were excited! Can't wait, but know it will be soon.

I think you've missed the point of my post.

Regardless of what RED has done, currently does, or will do in the future, effectively telling people not to rely on ANY announcements is never a good strategy. Especially when you have competition.

I'm aware of RED's history. I was there from day one when RED was born on DVXUser.

Denis,

It seems to me that this little company has maybe done a couple of hundred million dollars in business since it's inception when they started with 3d renders and a thousand dollar deposit.

It's been like this basically since day one.

Everything in life changes is a healthy way to look at things because, well, basically it's true.

Everyone here wants certainty. Want guarantees. Wants questions answered to plan. Wants to know specs. Wants a ship date.

The response is everything is subject to change. You can look at that as negative or you can look at that as fact.

It probably would never work in your relationship.

Wife: do you love me?
Husband: yes dear?
Wife: will you love me forever?
Husband: everything is subject to change dear?

But it works here because it's in the context of a mythical, online, ever growing story of a camera company called RED, being written by Jim and the RED team and sometimes...some of us.

Big announcements by Canon and RED....
Canon have production lines that can churnout 50,000 units per month per factory and a worldwide distribution network to back up the conveyors.

Perhaps a mass market consumer camera, fabricated and distributed by Canon but designed by RED with "RED Inside ™" is in the wings?

Panavision could have made easy $$ branding consumer goods, who wouldn't have bought a 35mm compact stills camera with that iconic Panavision logo?

I think you've missed the point of my post.

Regardless of what RED has done,
You've missed the point of my post, namely .... You cannot ignore what RED has already done. You have enough RED "experience", to understand the "Culture". When something is in the Store, you can order it. There are more good things coming, the good things will change before they get to the store.

Just a question I have always asked myself about that story. Did the frog really have a choice but to help the Scorpion? Was it the frogs nature to help? When their paths crossed was it both their tragic destiny? Did the frog deep down know he was going to get stung and do it anyways? Everyone always focuses on the scorpion when I find the frogs nature much more intresting.

Anyways I am holding on tight, lets see where this takes us!

So either Scarlet is now $15,000 or back in the '3K for $3K" range. :P

Really either is a suitable solution, get more money by jacking up the price on a crowd who will buy no matter what, or crush your competition and sell many more cameras. I think with the interesting release date of November 3rd, we may be seeing RED field a product that Canon never even knew it was competing with, be that in price OR stats. :D

I'm really hoping (but not expecting by any means) Scarlet is priced to kick the shit out of Canon's DSLR products. (priced comparable to their high-end stuff) That would be the ultimate gauntlet throw down from RED and it would position them in the perfect price range to get a HUGE market segment from the media pros who could benefit greatly from the (based on what we've already seen from RED) specs and features but who don't need the bells and whistles. Whatever the price, I'm looking forward to seeing what Dr. Jannard's Mad Science Division has cooked up for us.

Now... put your helmets on and expect more change. Like the scorpion... it is our nature.

Jim

Speaking of which, Scorpion sounds like a great name for a new sensor. Mysterium, Dragon, Scorpion...

I think the moral of the story is marketing and spin and it appears to work from what I am reading here, almost cultish fervour. But hey, for the first time since the early DVXuser days I am actually going to be able to wait this one out and not have to buy an F3 like I thought I would. Booked with my current cameras until January. That calls for a beer...no wait its only 9am.

Isn't the moral of that story to stay away from scorpions?

I think Red is the fox, Sony is the river, and maybe forum trolls are the scorpions :P
