RED is saying that everyone should shoot 4K so their films will be future proof. When 4K is standard, there will be a lot of 4K cameras for way cheaper price and computers that can easily edit 4K material will be as cheap as 1080p machines now. But the thing is that in the future resolution will go beyond 4K for displays, TV's, projectors etc and then your 4K material isn't future proof anymore. It might take 10, 15 or 20 years when 8K~ is standard, but that time will come. I think that people shouldn't look too much in the future but instead make their work for the time they are living in. Your next film is going to be seen NOW in 2K, it is made for this point in time, it's not made to be seen in 5 years or 10 years from now. Your film is going to have its impact to the audience and to your career NOW.
Use equipment that is standard for that point in time you are living in. There is no such a thing as future proof footage.
