What are the recommended ways of checking the quality of the footage, I am currently viewing on my apple 30" and the results don't look great. using 4K 16*9 25 fps 50 shutter

what app? Redcine, RA, FCP...?

if redcine check Debayer Quality and push it to FULL.

Redcine X full debayer full quality. Is it the resolution of the cinema display

In what way "not great"

The pictures look soft, have done many trials.

Paul

then there is a problem with the footage or you´re cheking in 1:1 zoom and see some motion blur or...

can you post some screenshoot?

No motion blur camera is locked off will try to post pic, I am on the wrong mac right now
Paul

What lens did you use?
What stop?
Your shutter speed of 50 means 180 deg
Try to use 9 deg just for test and let me know the result.

At this shutter speed any pan or movement will look soft.
If you want to estimate max res use shutter speed 1000
Is the scene very dynamic or slow moving?

The sceane is not dynamic Lens nikon 50mm

as a new red one owner I was hoping to find out what others were using to preview their results at 4k I think this is beyond the 30" display it's just they look soft

was the 50 mm shot wide open? images will get softer if you shoot wide open on most lenses. Depending on which nikon 50 mm you have it might not start getting sharp till and f4 in some cases.

Your 30" cannot display 4k so your scaling down to 2k/1080p and rendering out 1st yeah?
I find that trying to view 4k can look slightly soft until its rendered to a native resolution.
Also your lens may play a factor, Nikon 50mm 1.4/1.8/2.0/2.8, year? condition? which ones there's a large variety with a large swing in quality.
For optimum results when checking out the max res of the RED One rent a Master prime (Even just 1) for a day and shoot with it as your reference footage to judge future lenses/shots with quality wise.

Back focus is ok lens nikon 50 1.8
f4 I think picking up red lens today
will also render out a short clip to 1080 for test
thanks
