What are some of the tools you should have with you in order assemble, disassemble, and maintain your RED. Are there any particular tool sets you are quite fond of? I don't have my camera yet so I don't know what you'll need besides Torx screw heads.

Thanks guys.

My butter knife.........

for tightening the two screws of my ET bridge plate to the base of the Red one.

The blade is very thick and the handle is short (6cm) so it prevents ham-fisted me from
over tightening the screws and stripping the sockets or pulling them out of the base.

I'd like to get away from needing a allen key (will keep the butter knife) to assemble the Red.
I'm looking at getting a local machinist to make me a few of these T piece nuts for the side mounts and maybe for the 2 screws on the Red cradle

thou with all the problems the battery contacts are causing people I may swap it for a third party battery plate.
Oh yeah....http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=5213 Visible Dust products for cleaning your Red (but not sure about their lens cleaning solution)

Cheers,
Dave

What third party plate are you thinking of ?
Thank you

Note in our Terms and Conditions ( www.red.com/terms ) that if you use non-RED accessories and they damage your camera, your warranty is void. Just giving fair warning....

On a serious note when will you have a new batttery plate that doesn't let shut down the camera?

I'd be more concerned with the contacts making and breaking supply to the camera that I would about about anything.

But on a real serious note.....your present battery connector has caused Red some serious bad press in the field. If you be giving people friendly advice, I'd be trying to help people help Red on these battery issues first, rather than threaten them as they try to fix a poor performing component.

Cheers,

ugh so far off topic.

my quest for purchasing sets of tools for RED has been stopped by battery plates. :waaa:

Are "Element Technica" products approved ?
Is "Toys for Red" sound I/O panel approved ?
Is the "Birger mount" approved ?
Can you tell us what is approved and what is not ?
Thank you

Homemade power cables I can understand, but some of these "third party" solutions are made by vendors who supply industry standard battery/power solutions to every camera on the market. Suggesting that these products would void the warranty is a very bad idea.

Please list out what's approve and what's not. I don't see any list in this regards

Michael,

Getting back to your question (though I'm curious about the whole "third party products" thing too). Though it appears the PL mount will have torx plus screws from now on, everything else on the camera is still hex (allen) driven.

Bondhus makes hex drivers and allen keys, and people generally like them (I use them).

If you don't want to shell out for a whole set, then you should get the 3/16 and 7/32 sizes first and foremost. Those two will take care of most of your needs as far as attaching and removing handles, mounts, and the like.

For smaller precision drivers (for the screws on the mount, for example) Wiha is the way to go, and the sell torx plus drivers. They're somewhat pricey, but worth it.

Also, I'm not sure if it qualifies as a tool, but Zacuto's z-release system (their zicro mounts, coupled with their ZUD's, if you're using Red israeli arms) are extremely helpful for mounting accessories like an LCD to the camera. I can't tell you how much of a pain it is to have to screw the monitor onto an israeli arm every time you want to mount the LCD. I'd also recommend the Monstercine clamps. They work interchangeably with the ZUD's (they have their own version of the ZUD called the Spud) and "clamp" onto the 19mm rods, no screwing involved.

I think Brent was just.. anyway.........
can't tell you.....

Brent was just pointing out that some people have used homemade accessories that have damaged their cameras and voided the warranty. Pointing out our Terms and Conditions is not a threat, it is meant to be fair warning should a third-party accessory cause damage to the camera (or another RED component).

David, looked at the supplied thread links and you asked me to supply friendly advice. Check your last thread link where I say "Sometimes you need to break in a v-plate. We recommend that you engage and disengage a battery about 20x with some decent force to break it in. After that, you should get a much better mating." Would that qualify as trying to help? :)

Guys, you are going to have as good of an idea as me what is a "safe" accessory to use on the RED ONE. if you have any doubt, give us a call.

To maintain the sensor I can highly recommend the Visible Dust gear. it's been mentioned on the forums previously. Haven't used it often, but when it's needed it's a pretty crucial piece of kit. Get the Arctic Butterfly and the Sensor Loupe (illuminated magnifier for checking the sensor). You can get them in a kit from bhphotovideo.com

The Arctic Butterfly uses a AAA battery and rotates the brushes at high speed to flick any dust off the sensor.

Graetzy,
the arctic butterfly is designed to be rotated outside of the camera, this throws dust off the brush and builds up a static charge on the bristles. I wouldn't turn it on anywhere near the sensor.
Great piece of kit though, especially the loupe.

Shane.

I challenge anyone to find a Red in the wild that is not using some piece of non-Red gear or software!

Got a Panasonic monitor on top - technically have you voided your warranty? Had an audio company make you some cables? Built your own BNC adaptors? Used a third-party download program?
