Hi All,

I'm sorry if this kind of thing has been asked elsewhere - I searched but couldn't find a similar thread...I'm wondering what RED accessories and components people consider essential for a basic setup with Scarlet? I'm mostly studio bound but would like a simple mobile setup too. My tentative list is below - any suggestions would be much appreciated! I'm looking to consolidate everything into a single order as I'm based in Australia (hence thinking only RED accessories at this stage)...

Thanks in advance,

Daniel

Scarlet Al Canon package (possibly swap 2x redvolts for 4 pack)
Sliding top handle (with swat rail)
Outrigger handle
Redmote
Redmags (undecided on capacity and amount yet)
DSMC backpack (?)
Backpack Quickplate (?)
RED Brick 140w (?)
RED charger (?)
?

Well based on the initial shipping Scarlet I'd make my priority all of the following due to price Increases in 6 days:

Red Scarlet X
DSMC Sidehandle
RedMote
and
5"TouchScreen

Now. Out of those I did not get the RedMote reason being is for power.

Once I heard about the short battery life of the RV's in the DSMC Sidehandle, and the fact that they're in backorder and not initially shipping with the Scarlet from the get go, I decided while I'd go ahead and order both Red Volts and the Sidehandle, I decided I'd go ahead and order a Red Power Pack (2 Red Bricks and a V-mount Charger) and a ViewFactor Battery plate rather than a DSMC backpack and Backpack quickplate. Reasoning : I saved $1200 that I put towards power (Red Power Pack).

I am on a money crunch myself so I went ahead and found ways to pick up SSD's rather than buying from RED as well. There are multiple ways to save money on that front.

So what I went ahead and ordered was:

Scarlet-X with Canon AL Mount
DSMC Sidehandle
DSMC 5" Touchscreen
RedVolt 4 Pack
1 Travel Charger
(x)1 Red Power Pack (2 bricks and a charger)
(x)Viewfactor Brooks APU Battery Plate (prevents you from having to buy Backpack and $1200) : here is a link to the Battery Plate :http://www.viewfactor.net/index.php/products/epic-acc/fmj-top-x-1.html
RED Sliding Top Handle
100 MM swat Rail
(x)1x 256GB SSD
(x)1x 128GB SSD
(x)1x RedStation

(x) indicates what I ordered beforehand or separate.

I ordered most of the things that have a price jump next year early to avoid that hike. It looks like you'll spend an extra couple grand if you don't buy them soon. The REDMote is awesome but I can justify spending an extra $250 on that come next year. The rest I saw as pretty essential to get started. I got the Powerpack and plate go be shooting as soon as the camera gets to my door. Another investment I'd look at is a Hoodman 5.6" screen cover thing. You can find them by searching. I can't afford an evf at this moment. Thus I picked up the hoodman to help as much as possible when shooting in bright/outdoor conditions.

Other things I'd look at depending on where you shoot is a Rain Cover. Check out Woodencamera.com for alternatives to some accessories such as handles, rail options and mounting options for the Scarlet as well.

I went with the aluminum package, dropped the redvolts and SSDs then bought a 4 pack of redvolts and picked up 2 ssds from another reduser but I have found on my first shoot that 3 is the bare minimum so I'll probably should have picked up one more.

I also picked up the VF v-mount but I would pick up the wooden camera one now instead since it transmits battery % not just voltage... Actually I probably would have just gone Anton Bauer of either since AB batteries sit lower and more speak like.

My next purchase will be a fluid head or PL mount depending on rental demand.

Hey, thanks for the detailed replies guys - very helpful - good thinking on the power front - that viewfactor plate looks great - thanks for the link too! The SSD's are a lot but splitting a pack of 4 makes it a bit better I guess...The wooden camera stuff looks good too - the A-box might be needed for me (backordered at the moment)...I'm keen on the scarlet tactical ribcage as well but it might only be for aesthetics which is hard to justify! I don't have a rail system or FF but might delay them a bit too - any suggestions? Zacuto? Redrock? D follow?
looking forward to finalising an order soon...
cheers,

Daniel

personally i picked up the scarlet canon aluminum package. Right off the bat i knew i was going to need and extra four pack of redvolts and another 64gb mag, i think those are essential for almost everybody.

Daniel,

I would definitely take a look at our new microFollowFocus | Blue. With adjustable hard stops, backlash adjust, and the ability to convert it to a double sided studio version, it's the best value. I've had no issues torquing any lenses, from still photography lenses to the all of the Red Pro lenses (or at least all the one's I've been able to get my hands on).
