Water/weather proofing.
It allows for handheld use of the fixed scarlet with better protection then a weather cover, at modest manufacturing costs. Protects against little accidents. Only needs to resist being dropped in water to float (though if it could be stuck handheld into water that would be great too, given the relevant pressure impacts, that should be less then dropping it in water). For anybody that wants to scuba dive, they can buy a case.
All buttons and controls can be made weather proofed (to the extent that it does not damage it). The case can also be. Modules can be, but waterproofing is another issue. Display, speaker, microphone and lens can be weather proofed. Interface ports can be in sealed compartments, and short range wireless wideband datalink to disk backup could be used for even more protection. Magnetic induction could be used for charging.
