Hi all,

I have my RedCineX open and my clips in the project

The status keeps saying "Error saving RMD file/volume/LaCie_1/project 2

It also keeps saying "Error reading from app update feed. Error 3

AND...it says "RedRocket is in a 4x PCI-Ex lane. The RedRocket requires an 8x lane to perform properly"

I have the rocket in an Mlogic mlinkR Box that is built for rocket so how can this be??

Please please help

I'm fairly new to RED and keep coming across little problems I've never encountered using DaVinci and Alexa.

I need all the help I can get

Thanks in advance

Hi james,
Got the same messages today on a previously good working clip.

- Error reading from app update feed. Error 3 -

How to save this clip / solve the problem? Anyone from RED Team ??

I typically see the RMD error when I'm reading from the RedMags directly, since they are write protected (to prevent accidental deletion/overwriting of clips). So your culprit is likely a permissions error on the drive/folder.

As for the 4x PCI lane thing, that's normal, but allow me to explain fully:

Because you are getting that message, the RedRocket is functioning at around half-speed. (Actually a little better than half; I think that in an ideal scenario it doesn't saturate a full 8x lanes, but don't quote me on that) So the Rocket *is* helping you, and it *is* speeding things up. Why the crunch? Because Thunderbolt V1 doesn't have enough bandwidth to accommodate the equivalent of 8x lanes. It can handle 4x. But not 8x. I know 10Gb/s sounds like a lot, and it is, but internally to a computer data can travel much faster than what we are used to for external connections.

So, the Rocket scales back and runs at 4x.

Which is still helpful! Although, depending on specifically what you are doing, in specifically which software, on specifically what machine, there are, as of the past few months (thanks to Red's new GPU acceleration in RXC and their SDK that is slowly rolling out to things like DaVinci and other 3rd parties), you might get equivalent or better performance with just the CPU/GPU than you do with the Rocket rolled in. This is a relatively new "paradigm shift", and it is still the minority case. But it is possible.

Thanks Nick that's veri interesting

Wim i went in the preferences menu and changed the RMD path now RMD is saved with the red files

I'm gonna run a test tomorrow without the rocket and see how fast it goes.

I'm using a late 2013 iMac and redineX For transcoding

James, in RCX, make sure to go to your Preferences, then System, and make sure OpenCL is checked. Also make sure that your NVidia card is checked, but your Intel chip is not. At least, having my Intel chip checked on my MacBook Pro has caused me errors and caused transcodes to fail. The default setting seems to be to check the first "graphics chip" that shows up in the system, which on mine is the Intel. Until I manually changed it, I had all sorts of trouble in RCX version 22.1 and beyond.

Bear in mind, you can leave these settings the same with a Rocket plugged in. In theory, they help each other. But there are tasks and functions where it will either hinder, or only help a litttttttle bit, so testing can save you time, headaches, and bank account.
