I read an article a while back about how the DP for 300 used this equipment that allowed him to
have 2 cameras shooting thru the same lense, one camera was over cranked, one running at 24 fps, and they were both
some how going through some special equipment so they both were hooked up to one lense,
so when they cut between the overcranked and regular speed footage, the camera angle didn't change,
and that's apparently how they did such nice ramping in that movie.

Does anyone know what the equipment is and who makes it?

Thanks

Hi Troy. Work on the second unit of 300 and what i remember is they shot high speed very often... and they did the ramping (high speed to 24 fps) in post and not on set or through any special equipment like you mention.

Thanks for the response Etienne, weird, I must have mis read the article, I have a vivid memory of this article, or maybe I thought I did, anyway thanks for the response.

I think you are referring to the lens morph/nested zoom shots. They had three arri camera with wide/med/macro lens shooting at 150fps and then cut together.

if they shot over cranked, they would just drop frames in post for 24fps. no need for two cameras for the same shot.

Thanks for the responses guys, I must have confused it with what Tim explained.

Thanks

I believe 300 was shot all on 35mm negative, using Arriflex, Panavision, and Photosonics cameras. The D.I. was done by Stefan Sonnenfeld at Company 3 in Santa Monica.

I think there were a few shots done as described, two cameras at different frame rates shooting the same image. You basically need an over-under 2-camera rig similar to a 3D rig except that both lenses are aligned through the mirror with no interocular spacing.
