  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPICs are made for countries like INDIA

India

India

Well, We're a RED camera rental house in Bombay & are always booked... in fact we need to hire additional cameras from other rental houses in Bombay to service our clients...

....and still you plan to buy a 'Sxxy F65"

You're always welcomed, Thomas...

Uh, though i agree with your perspective... i also believe the move to digital is also due to sense of "empowerment" for the filmmaker... it's a long discussion... but to keep it short:
1) Filmmakers are no longer pressurized to complete principle photography at a 4:1 ratio (due to expensive stock)
2) Producers some how wanna "avoid" the entire lab process... many reasons, but none creative :)
3) DoP's trying to make a move up from TV to Films are more than glad to shoot digital

My 2 cents :)

Cheers ~

Yep... one generation more and say goodbye to old boy ways...

Well this post is full of Indian shooting chaotic mess & move toward digital.

For your kind information for people who dont know,

Already 1/3 of film industry in south india have already moved to (60:40) towards Red One / EPic or Arri Alexa & there are breed of filmmakers who shoot on Canon 5D/7D and Sony EX3. South India have already have more than 40 films released shot on Digital Cinema Cameras like RED ONE / Alexa in last three years and still bombay is lacking behind interms of high budget feature films. I've seen so many small budget feature films in Mumbai too started move / moved to Digital.

Myth of Film Cameras being used is only in dreams.

Wait and watch how many big hindi feature films in coming months moving toward Epic / Alexa (Codex Recorder).

Paul you should be ashamed for even passing on a comment like that

I am sorry. I wasn't trying to be offensive. This was something I heard about 25 years ago. I don't recall if I read it somewhere or if I heard someone say it, but it was always unbelievable to me. I thought it was an offensive remark as well, but I recounted it in light of the discussion about crews in India being really huge. Rather than doing that or sanitizing the original remark I heard, maybe I should have just kept my mouth shut. My apologies...

Hey Paul, the truth is every company will send a baby sitter for their insurance/assurance and you will have to pay/feed for the labor but it's cheap. It's great having the man power any way.

The equipment is usual very well taken care of most of the time.

I love it after a while.

Good luck.

Jim sure knows about it. Ra.one, this year's biggest Bollywood film used 23 Red cameras in one scene.

Hey Suman... where did ya get that snap from? :)

That's yours truly in the RED t-shirt & RED cap at the bottom left :) I supplied those cameras & kinda managed the "RED" bit of it for the client.

Well, to be honest, it was a 16 camera shoot (not 23)... 8 cameras rigged in front of the train (your pic) & 8 cameras rigged on the side of the train (at the entrance of the compartment)
Extremely risky yet an awesome experience... We were traveling at 80 kmph & shot some amazing footage...

Why 8 cameras? Well, we were shooting "32K" background plates for an ambitious vfx based action sequence... They stitched the images from 8 cameras together & then those plates have been used pretty interestingly to create some extremely dynamic shots... Please search online for RA.One & you'll have a huge list of promos... with atleast one shot from this interesting train action sequence in almost every promo!

The movie release 26th OCT & is expected to be a top grosser...

Cheers ~

@ Jeetu: My favourite train shot in RA.One is where the camera is above the passengers leaning out of the train and G.One comes into view above them and the passengers look up. Very nicely done. Hope the film is a blockbuster. Not that SRK is my favourite actor but because it could start a trend for carefully planned movies. I think most of the younger generation of Indian filmmakers are trying to bring sanity into the chaotic Bollywood of yesteryears.

Loved reading Mark's thoughts and refections on India. I as well am a big fan of the culture and the surge of life force in India that is unmatched in any other place I've been on the planet (and I've been to a lot of places :-)

Here's some of my thoughts from my last trip over from another REDuser thread, for those that want to get a feel for what is so special about India and their love of Cinema it's kind of a fun read.
