I am going to get my epic in a week but now i am thinking if it is worth it over the scarlet. The differences are not to major between the 2 cameras in my opinion. (except 5k, hdrx and slow motion). Can you please convince me why should I keep the epic over the scarlet. Epic costs 3x times more.
Will red make epic even better then scarlet in future? is the scarlet is going to get the dragon sensor also?
What other major differences the cameras have? Does anybody have a comparison list?

Thank you.
George

I was going to buy the Scarlet and decided to wait for Epic stage 4. The differences are fairly significant, at least for what I do. But the Scarlet has everything one needs for a feature film production. Its, like a fellow Reduser posted in another thread, the camera that is going to truly revolutionize the industry.

The Epic is the camera for those that need fast frame rates, HDR and 5K APS-H recording. The Scarlet is for those that are happy with Red One MX like performance (Which was one of the standards of high end TVC and Film production.)

I went Epic because I shoot a lot of high speed. Its part of my cinematic language. And in picture quality its the top of the ladder. 5K aps-H vs 4K APS-C is still a significant difference. And don't forget different compression settings for both cameras. Its like Comparing the road version of a Porsche 911 to a racing spec Porsche 911 GT3.

As far as I know both cameras have the same compression. in that sense they are the same. If you shoot 4K 24fps with both cameras you should get the same quality image don't you? The only difference epic will make is only 5k Hdr mode.

The reasons stated are big differences.

3:1 compression is a big deal. 5k is a big deal. 96FPS in 5k is a HUGE deal....

The Epic is 3x the camera the SCarlet is.... but its also three times the price. Comparing a 9k body to a 35k body is unfair. Compare similar feature sets. The Scarlet and F3, C300. The Epic and well.... What else thats purchaseable right now? Alexa, which doesnt do high frame rates? F65 isnt out yet...? Feel safe in your investment.

You should never have any remorse about a tool for business. If its the right purchase there should be no remorse. If you feel remorse, perhaps consider a different option.

In my opinion, EPIC is simply the most versatile digital cinema cameras on the market, and the Scarlet isn't. EPIC's technical specs allow you as a storyteller to have the widest gamut of options for each step of the shooting process including the range in resolutions, framerates, compression ratios, dynamic range, etc. The Scarlet does a lot of things very well, and in some cases just as well as the EPIC; but it doesn't have the amazing flexibility in everything the EPIC has in the above categories. If were planning on shooting your EPIC in 4K HD 24p all the time, then Scarlet is probably the way to go. It's all in what you need and the budget you have to get there.

Dragon sensor will be available for Scarlet, but cost more. I also assume like the MX sensor now, the Scarlet won't be able to shoot full frame with its more limited processing power.

See in my opinion HDR function and the 5K is not worth to pay 3x more, I am sorry but that is my opinion.

isn't scarlet doing 3:1 compression also?

Will dragon sensor available be available for scarlet also, that will make the cameras even more similar.
Is it confirmed that the upgrade price will be be more for scarlet then for epic?

Yes to more expensive Dragon on the Scarlet, also yes to Scarlet NOT having 3:1 compression at 5K and 4K.n

Compression on Scarlet.

6:1 compression with the improved circuitry inside Scarlet should cover many people's needs. Exceptions might be VFX. 5:1 has been the sweet spot with Epic with the features I've worked on.

5K has advantages, especially when you need to resolve true 4K. The oversampling has many uses. For everything else, Scarlet will be just fine.

I'm buying a Scarlet. I'm absolutely thrilled. But if I could afford to, I'd hands down get an Epic.
But if you know the features - which you do - and they don't add up for you - which they don't - I guess you can always put yourself in line for a Scarlet and then sell your Epic when your tickets coming up.

Bare in mind studies have shown people ALWAYS end up preferring what ever it is that they actually HAVE :))
I've read several I'd rather have a GH2 than a Scarlet posts. And with an Epic, boy I'm pretty sure you'll fall head over heels :D

Best Wishes

This is gonna be one of those things where, on paper the differences seem so slight, but in actuality there are already massive advantages. I'm willing to bet that, as amazing as the footy from Scarlet is, once you get a taste for 5k, 4k just doesn't seem as good any more.

We will always want more. But the Scarlet truly is it. I tell you if I couldn't get financing for the Epic I would've gone Scarlet. No other option makes sense for a purchase right now. And with an upgrade path Commitment by Red, getting a Red camera seems like the best business decision for anyone working on narrative projects. It's not currently the camera for every available job, but for filmmaking, tvc's, even corporate and certain documentaries, it's the best proposition on the market price/performance. It will be for at least a couple of years. Let's not forget red patented 4k raw capture. This is a hurdle other manufacturers are having a hard time overcoming efficiently, at least. And Dragon should be the absolute leader in technology.its red's 3rd generation sensor. Should be absolutely stunning!

Don't have to beat 'em, just join 'em! I ordered a Scarlet to back up my Epic! After spending big on accessories, grips, lighting, media and post tools, another $9,750 to essentially double my shooting power has got to be a good thing! Best of both worlds baby!

Alexa, which doesnt do high frame rates? F65 isnt out yet...?

Alexa does 120 fps, but it's in a price range that is way off the scale.

Can somebody please put a list of the main differences between epic and scarlet.

1. Epic max cine frame size/frame rate: 5K, 120 fps || Scarlet max cine frame size/frame rate: 4K, 24 fps
2. Epic max compression quality: 5K 24fps, 3:1 || Scarlet max compression quality: 4K 24fps, 6:1
3. Epic max frame rate: 2K, 300fps || Scarlet max frame rate: 2K, 60fps (or 1K 120fps, if that is useable for you)
4. Epic max HDRx frame size/frame rate: 5K, 60fps || Scarlet max HDRx frame size/frame rate: 3K, 25fps

1. Epic max cine frame size/frame rate: 5K, 120 fps || Scarlet max cine frame size/frame rate: 4K, 24 fps
2. Epic max compression quality: 5K 24fps, 3:1 || Scarlet max compression quality: 4K 24fps, 6:1
3. Epic max frame rate: 2K, 300fps || Scarlet max frame rate: 2K, 60fps (or 1K 120fps, if that is useable for you)
4. Epic max HDRx frame size/frame rate: 5K, 60fps || Scarlet max HDRx frame size/frame rate: 3K, 25fps
