  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-X test shoot - Sunset on Han River (4K YouTube upload)

This is awesome! These clips look great and I've had no problem with playing them!

I'm telling you, this Youtube 4k is what turned me to 4k. The distribution is here NOW. You can host the footage on Youtube, and show it from there for short form work, music videos, commericals, short films etc.... The ability to easily show your 4k work, and have you tube do the downscale to 1080, 720 and 480 for the slower computers out there is awesome.

The shot looks amazing!

The only real problem with this 4K video at youtube is that it starts to break up when there is motion in the shot, like panning. They need a bitrate at least twice what it is now, probably.

I didn't notice any from what I saw, but then again there went too many crazy camera movies in what was posted in this thread. I'm also watching it on what is basically an 1920x1080 monitor. I can't wait to see what youtube does down the road with this. Hopefully Vimeo will follow, and possibly improve upon what youtube has done so far.

Downloading the videos from keepvid:
http://www.keepvid.com/?url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hytEVTzWZ8

I opened both in Quicktime and Inspector says:

Original:
H.264, 4096x2304
AAC, 44100Hz, Stereo (Sx Dx)
23,98 fps
42,1 MB
11,22 Mbit/s

1080p:
H.264, 1920x1080
AAC, 44100 Hz, Stereo (Sx Dx)
23,98 fps
6,4 MB
1,70 Mbit/s

So exporting a 2560x1440 (if 16:9) in H.264 at 12-15Mbit/s is definitely faster then ProRes 4444 for the upload.
I don't know if you export with these settings YouTube doesn't perform the conversion and use your native file without any transcode... However it's so close (a bit over) to its specs once converted.

Comparing numbers, Original is 7 times better than 1080p. Probably with lower resolution (2560x1440) instead of 4K, also if the bitrate will be the same, the image will looks better.

It looks great at ISO 800 but it doesn't really show how Epic handles really low light conditions. These days Sunset will look great if you shoot in Seoul, Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai, Hongkong, and New York. Trust or not, FS100 sees more detail in complete dark than most cameras out there. Love to see more test footage in extreme conditions.
