  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-X STAGE 3 and 3.5 Now Begins...

@ Tyler:
why you post this here? it doesn't make sense. this thread is about stage-3... are you drunk?
Anyway,if you don't like RED, don't buy it... is simple, right? you have many other brands...
I love what RED is doing, not only the products but the way they treat customers (and I guess I am not the only one :))

What's the difference:

STAGE 3
$28,000 with up to $17,500 credit for traded-in RED ONE.

STAGE 3.5
$27,500 with $17,500 potential credit for traded-in RED ONE.

Tyler,
I understand your frustrations. There are always ergonomic issues with every camera and some on the Epic are due to its unique small size.

You could be right that the Epic is beta. Such is the market. The Alexa was raw less until just recently. But I just wanted to say we shot with 6 3D rigs with 12 Epics that were just slightly more beta than the alpha "minus 13mm's" we tested with on Spiderman. Remote was dicey, no playback, some sensitive power issues but we never lost any footage and every creative involved was stunned by the imagery.

Even now deep into post and VfX the VFX supervisor, Jerome Chen, is so happy with the resolution and DR.

You are not wrong my friend, but every camera has quirks and we found the image quality and size factor made it possible to make our little film.

I remember at one point it was mentioned that we may be able to wait and trade up to the ff35 monstro sensor. Am I wrong or is this possible?

Thanks

I doubt you can trade up to the FF35 since things have changed, get the EPIC now and upgrade the sensor but keep the body...like with the R1,
I could be wrong...but considering they also took out the RED discount to Scarlet deal guess Stage 3 is one of the last ways to ditch the R1 body for the next gen at an awesome deal...

Like i said, COULD BE WRONG...so don't take my word as gospel

I agree with ya man, overall image quality and DR is insane (especially in 3:1 compression). The biggest thing that still pisses me off about the camera is no playback. Such a problem when you have clients around and they want you to pull up the last take. Just worked on a Verizon commercial and we were doing lots of green screen work- not having playback became even more of an issue. I'm wondering if the camera brains physically cannot handle playing back the data (being that its so much bandwidth)?

I agree with you, I also love the resolution of the camera, as mentioned just shot with it myself, it holds up well. And I am really looking forward to seeing what the camera can do after we have enough firmware updates to make a significant difference. Also as you mentioned the Alexa is just now suitable and able to be considered "up to date" and I think we were waiting on color bard for some time. I appreciate your feedback and am glad to see that people out there can understand where I am coming from.

Jim and Jarred have already stated that playback is working and they are testing Alpha builds. I think playback is scheduled for a firmware 2.0 update which I think they are aiming for December.

Hope that helps.

Just placed my deposit. One question, I was taxed for the deposit itself- is that normal?

Also- I'm a little concerned about the trade-in value. My camera has always had a wierd problem where it would 'stick' while booting up every so often (the fix is to unplug the monitor and re-boot). The issue has been aknowleged by many others on the forum & I really hope RED doesn't doc my trade-in value as that was how the camera was shipped to me.

Any clarification would be great. Thank & excited.

Did you order within the EU?

Drew, I am pretty sure the web confirmation email shows a tax on there - but that is just the form calculation (hard-coded tax calculation). Actual charge is straight deposit amount.

Hey there Red folk, forgive me if this has been answered but - I have two reds. One MX upgraded (low serial number) that I want to keep, and one M sensor (high serial number) that I want to trade in. Is it possible to use my low serial number for the Epic x swap, but trade in the high serial number, or do I have to wait for the high serial number to come up? I understand if I have to wait for the high serial number to come up, just thought I'd ask.

Thanks,

Nick

PS- does the epic x still come with a adapter cable from red one to epic, or do we have to buy one separately?

Nick, the trade-in program is pretty complex for us to execute. Making exceptions like that is going to be tough.

PS, does not come with adaptor cable to use RED BRICK with EPIC.
