  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic-X (EOS Mount) and Canon C300 (EOS Mount) side by side photos

Not to mention if you downsample from 5K to HD you're going to clean up a lot of noise as well....

Well to be fair, if you are talking about strictly deriving a 1920x1080 image, then you should note that the C300 derives its image from a 4K sensor resolution.

I've heard this mentioned too, but what I haven't seen is detailed specifics on whether they are saying their sensor is 4K (3840x2160) of 4 sub-pixel RGGB (2x2 config) pixels, or whether they are using the 4K terminology to describe the sensor at the sub-pixel level already (eg 2x2 x 1920x1080 = 3840x2160 = "4K").

If possible, can you link to documentation from Canon that describes which one is the right one, just for my own edification? I don't want to discuss C300 image quality here, I'm just curious as to which one is the accurate description of what they call 4K, then leave it at that and concentrate on physical differences only in this thread.

Thanks!

Cheers from Tokyo,

Paul :)

Paul,

thanks for great photos.

Also Canon C300 could be compared only with RED Scarlet-X in some ways but not in all.

But not with Epic in most ways.

Somebody would say apples to oranges.

Epic could be named as the most affordable high speed digital cine camera on the planet (up to 300 fps @ 2K).

But I don't shoot high speed or 3D with motion pictures because I'm interested in more to get a good script

and dramatical work or a pure story driven moving images and not in any new technical hype,...

Because of that I already placed my orders to both cameras Canon C300 and RED Scarlet-X.

Why?

Scarlet will give me back something that I was missing from my RED ONE MX that I sold exactly one year and half ago.

Canon C300 will give me something that I would miss from my Scarlet-X

and that is shooting portraits, landscapes and sky between f/4.0 and f/5.6 @ super clean high ISO at available light, low light or minimum light.

Probably Scarlet Dragon upgrade could change this situation or balance next year but till then we have to wait and see.

For me there is no any sort of "future proof" camera today

just because the future is stupid (J. Holzer)

that means in the future there will be no any leading standard

but there are many players in that field of the image standard resolution like a HD, 2K, 4K and upcoming 8K, etc,...

Actually the future proof is in a kind of mix from all of them together if you can afford it.

HD, 2K, 4K , 8K, 3D, 2D, film, digital, etc,...

The sensor activa array is 3840x2160, bayer pattern.

In the Paramount presentation Canons Laurence J. Thorpe stated the following:

"Now, we don't debayer"
"We suck out the blue 1920x1080. We suck out the red 1920x1080"
"...We then sum those two greens. So we bring out four signals out of the sensor, sum the two greens and we end up with a super green that has extended dynamic range, has a very high MTF, and because of the half pixel offset, no Aliasing"

...so only a little bit of cheating....:-)

Not debayering, and simply extracting blue and red at 1:1 must bring some kind of artifacts to the table...moire and aliasing

....but at 8 bit, 50 mbit, mpeg2 4:2:2, who is going to notice?

Thanks guys for the strap lead, really appreciate it. That with a Red Handle and the EVF/LCD will be great for hand held. Love the pics Paul.

Cheers from Title Town,

Mike
