Greetings from Tokyo!

I just wanted to share some photos I took yesterday of my Epic-X next to the new Canon C300 EOS camera, so you can compare the size and shape of both of them side by side (this is especially useful as Scarlet, the real contender at this price level, is identical in size to Epic).

I didn't have time to do any image comparison sorry, so no point in asking for samples of the C300's image as I don't have any. I did view some samples though, and in general the image reminded me strongly of the 5D MkII's color rendition with the CineStyle LUT applied at acquisition, but the C300's image is mercifully free of the crazy softness and moire that the 5D had. The 8 bit definitely shows its limitations when looking at high dynamic range images though, with the same ugly roll-off that the 5D had when the darks are exposed properly. Nowhere near Epic or Alexa's smooth image roll-off, that's for sure!

Purely on the physical side though, they are surprisingly similar in weight! Epic is heavier, but not by a significant amount. They are also roughly the same dimensions, though it's easy to see the different design philosophies at play.

Naturally I'm biased to Red, but regardless of that, the Epic just feels like it's meant to be USED on high end movie productions. Strong, solid and built like a tank. The C300 feels more like a documentary/TV type camera, which are genres I'm certain it's well suited to.

Anyway, I figured people would enjoy seeing the two cameras side by side, just for curiosity's sake if nothing else, so here they are! Maybe the first such set of images worldwide?

Many thanks to marimoRECORDS for supplying the C300 and letting me share these images with you :)

marimoRECORDS was testing the C300 for an article in Video Alpha magazine here in Japan. You can read their full review (in Japanese of course) in the December 23rd issue.

Thanks Paul. Does the canon record to cf cards? Is the Battery in the handle. Would you know the aprox record time with one battery?

Build quality is important.

My f3 despite its picture isn't the strongest camera ever. Looking fwd to my scarlet.

Hopefully the c300 is built very well.

Yes to CF Cards.
No to battery in the handle (it goes on the back).
Around two hours on one (tiny) battery.

Noticed that the Epic pic shows a strap on the handle. Where did that come from? And how is it attached to the Epic handle?

What do you guys think? for a feature film .
2 cameras.
night outdoor scenes - c300
daylight and interior - RED epic

Why would you want that setup? Not sure why you wouldnt just go Epic for the whole thing..... pretty sure the aesthetic of the shots would feel different if intercut.

It's this product, the Pixgear camera grip strap (sorry for the Japanese page but that's where I bought it from, Yodobashi camera).

Just take off the photo camera baseplate and you're left with a simple strap that fits perfectly :)

No doubt you'll be able to find a similar (or same) product at B&H or Adorama. The manufacturer is Hakuba.

HTH!

Cheers from Tokyo,

Paul :)

well done chap. Horrible looking little bugger no?
Hehe, yeah, the C300 does have that "warts and all" look about it. I actually took off the carry handle of the C300 to match as closely as possible the two cameras' baseline package, or it would have been even taller!

Cheers!

Paul :)

I'm pretty confident Epic will eat the C300 even in low light. 8 bits vs 16 bits, 1920x1080 MXF vs 5120x2700 RAW.... the list goes on. Not to mention if you downsample from 5K to HD you're going to clean up a lot of noise as well....

I think you have not shot with EPIC at night....

:)

And I also think you are threadjacking...trying to take the conversation in a direction you want. Just start a new thread if you want to ask that question. Don't take over Pauls nice thread... :)
