Now that Epic-X is officially shipping and owners have taken delivery, can we get an official word regarding its abilities as a still camera in its dedicated "Still" mode? Epic-X, when announced, was marketed as a DSMC and with the ability to be switched between "Still" and "Motion Picture" modes. Can somebody from Red comment about Epic-X's specs as a still camera? Will time-exposures still be possible?

Surely I'm not the only one who is wondering about this? I recall seeing images of Epic's "Still" and "Motion" switch? Does Epic-X still include this switch? I may have missed the news that was excluded removed long ago and missed the news.

Can somebody from Red please chime in?

Thanks Justin. So the switch is on the side-handle. I finally found the side-handle product listing, which is curiously difficult to find, on Red.com. However, the "stills" switch cannot be seen.

I'll just cross my fingers and hope that "stills" will be part of a future build.

The stills/motion switch is right on the side handle actually. I'm sure they will enable the stills mode in the firmware shortly...they probably just want to get the motion mode fleshed out before working on the stills menu.

Agreed. All the stills-related features in RC-X Pro suggest that stills mode is only a short time away.

A quick look at the Redmote and Side Handle product photos in the store will show a rocker/switch labled "motion" and "stills" on the top left side of the Redmote and "M" and "S" on the front of the handle. What's coming is clear.

Justin... any idea if that's the same as hitting the "Camera" button to export a still from RCX? Are there new still capabilities in RCX-Pro? Mmm.... HDRx still export.... Can't wait for that!!!

Sorry.... I was talking about the software... You can easily send a still out of RCX by pressing the little Camera button. Wondering if RCX Pro has more capabilities for still workflow... I should start playing with it... :)

Ooo, there is now a "stills" button right next to the normal "snapshot" button. When you click it, it puts a still down in the timeline area...looks like you can put a bunch there and easily flip through them to compare.

You can also grade stills independently from the clip as a whole.

A common workflow would be to tag stills with markers first, then convert the tags to stills and then output.

Tagging via markers will also happen on camera in an upcoming firmware.

Just curious, Deanan...

Is this something that some of the fashion photography pros have been sliently beta-testing, or is this stuff all still inside RED? I'm really curious to see what people think about it when it all comes together.

I've also been outputting stills from Resolve. I love using power windows and qualifiers to fine tune adjustments. You could also do the one-lights in RCX and then go into P'Shop. Either works well and stills out of the Red are beautiful. Creating a R3D to still image workflow is going to be interesting.

Is stills mode from the side handle enabled in the latest firmware? If not, is there a rough timeline when it's expected (no pressure on Red intended, just curious)?

Thanks,
Tim

I'm interested in the stills mode as well. Which firmware will enable this?

Cheers
Colin

Since Adobe did a great job on importing R3D files in PP and AE, i cross my fingers that they update also Camera Raw as soon as the still mode from Red Works, would love to open stills directly in Lightroom or PS without going RCX first.
