I'm not sure if this has been covered but I haven't found any information about the Epic-X Dragon, I called Red to purchase a epic-m Dragon and was advised that the Epic-x dragon would be released soon and at a lower price. Anyone know anything about this?

That would be good news!

I bet the Epic-X Dragon will be the same price as the actual Epic-M Dragon, as the new Dragon upgrade price will be increased shortly...

For some reason I seem to remember Jarred saying $24k for the brain. That number sticks in my head but I'm not sure if it's accurate.

Good to here we are getting close.

He did say that, but everything i subject to change...

While trying to figure out Reds pricing structue when the opportunity came to buy the battle tested epic m dragons, it struck me that maybe this was a way to clear out the epic m, and reduce the price on epic x, gaining more sales on a lower price and staying competetive in the marketplace. I'll bet we see a much lower price entre to Red dragon. Of course this comes from my experience that everytime I get a good deal, a better one is coming soon.

idk man that deal was pretty good! i kind of doubt they will lower dragon x while increasing upgrading pricing, but who really knows...i just hope they give us some notice of what all the changes in pricing will be (if anything else is changing that we are unaware of, like say ending of the upgrade program, MX fire sale, who really knows...)

If anything, I would suspect a price increase of Epic X vs a price decrease. The BT Dragons were consistant with past BT offerings in that they were just a spectacular deal, plan and simple. I highly doubt they are an indication of things to come. In my mind, the fact that upgrades are going up in price and the fact that Arri has basically failed to bring a new competing cam out lead me to think that an increase is more likely.

Just my guess though. :)

I wouldn't say Arri failed, they do quite well for a less extensive set of cutting edge features (and will have their 4k firmware upgrades out shortly, a good move for them I think versus releasing a whole new camera and pissing off current users). Branding and history seem to go a long way with folks when it comes to Arri fanaticism. Personally I'd love to add an XT or Amira to my inventory if I could only afford the damn things lol! It would at least book well with all my Arri fanboy buddies! No reason not to own multiple toolsets, makes great sense for diversity sake.. As for Red increasing the price I am not so sure they will do that on MX, they are after all still competing with Sony, Canon, other more affordably priced competitors than Arri, plus they claimed to have originally cut the prices so steeply due to better than predicted sales/market saturation and and a recoup of R&D, none of that has changed on the MX sensor. I think the increase in upgrade pricing may not necessarily be reflected in new Dragon purchases, it might be just an incentive to help get people to wrap up their choices on the upgrade program. I think its kind of bad timing though, the roll out of the new sensor wasn't particularly smooth sailing, so I can imagine a lot of people are still on the fence because of DEB, red orbs, not liking OLPF swaps. I've heard a fair bit of complaints from people I work with, and know some owner ops are still on the fence about what to do. They now have a sense of impending pressure to not miss the cut off date and pay more, but thats only if they feel the upgrade is worth it at all. For Reds sake I hope all these kinks are worked out before the Dec 1st deadline, it would be much easier to get people on the fence to go to Dragon if Deb were in camera, or the standard OLPF was on the market, or the new low light OLPF was on the market. I think those particular things are simply holding some people back for the time being, rightly or wrongly..

Red orbs seems to fixed on both OLPFs. And I'm glad DEB is not available in camera as you can only decide if you need it in post. I rarely have shots that need it ON. DaVinci has already incorporated DEB in the software. Others will have it soon enough.

Very good point!

I'm holding back on my Epic to Dragon update... mainly to see how things settle - and also see what price the Epic-Dragon ends up being... or, what clues are dropped (etc).

However, I expect something like the Epic X major reduction to happen again... not saying the price will go that low ($34K to $22K - or something like that, if I remember), but I was one of those who lost a bit on the last price reductions... so I'd not really like that to happen again :)

I pretty much expect there to be no news on the Epic-Dragon price until after the deadline... so it's really a case of trying to guess which way to go. Shame there's nothing from Red on this front, but, business is business at the end of the day.

My frame of mind is, if a new Epic Dragon isn't substantially more then the upgrade, I'd get a new body and keep the MX. But, that's just me - and it all depends on cost - and that's something we won't find out until later... so all is a gamble I suppose.

Andy, you know that the cost of upgrading an eligible Epic to Dragon jumps by several thousand dollars on December 1st of this year?

Yes, I knew ;)

But, here in the UK, when all is said and done in terms of the costs that are added (import etc - all built in by RED), I'm thinking that, if a new Epic Dragon is $18K (just a guess!), I think (finances permitting) that I'd rather get a whole new body (and warranty etc).

Still weighing it all up, to be honest.

Lucky I'm not shooting, stuck on a big CGI project, so I'm in 'mmm' (strokes chin) mode ;)

My hope is of course a competitive price for a Red Epic Dragon X. I also hope and think the upgrade price is going up because they want to get that shyte done with lol and I think when they have those done for the most part that they will be able to streamline their engineer lines, etc. and will be even more efficent. I think the price increase is really a direct impact on slowing down the line and using up resources because ahen you have a manufacturing line setup and streamlined you can knock the product out much quicker the. Taking an old item, removing brains and rebuilding it. Much more costly process I imagine. So I hope this price increase is for late upgrades only ;)

Is there anyone from RED that could shed some light on this? I would very much like a Dragon but would be gutted if the Dragon Epic-x was released next month.
