General question: How can Epic 5K footage be viewed and edited without initial transcoding? I mean taking footages directly from camera to playback and editing. Is Avid able to do this? can this be done with a macbook only? What would this workflow look like. This is a 5K epic 3D shoot aimed at an eventual cinema release.

P pro cs5.5 and Redcine X both work with the footage natively quite easily without needing transcodes, but ideally you want something higher end then a macbook to cut on if the budget permits it (macbooks are no longer made, besides for education customers anyway, I would recommend using a high end mac pro if possible, or a quadcore macbook pro with a thunderbolt r6 if you need to stay mobile, OWC SSD for the aps and OSX if possible budget wise). I own Avids newest version but am still just getting into learning it (or at least that is what I tell myself to sleep at night), so I am not sure whether 5k AMA support has been implemented yet, though I do know the first 2 programs I mentioned work fine. Generally speaking if you search around the forum a bit you can find answers for your questions, because usually it has been brought up by someone else previously, so that is a huge asset if you have the time to wander the threads for a while. I know last time I looked into it Avid didn't yet have the plugins, but that was months ago, so for all I know they might have it working now.... honestly I am not so sure though, so your better off hearing that from someone else, or giving it a try if you already own the App.

For casual viewing RCX works great on a MBPro...for a feature I would consider a better option like QTake or Ki Mini Pro. With the later you have realtime playback at 1080 of your footage with full metadata and with current fw, it can be linked to the Epic via a single BNC cable which will trigger auto record on each camera roll. With Qtake you have full RT 3D playback
